I was looking at photos of the Tour de France and realized that in so many ways it compares to life and then it hit me… it is just like “The Trough”.
No wonder Cobalt's a HOG

Some times it is dismal

Nice photos!

Sort of off-topic, but a co-worker who is (well, was) into bike racing and biking in general told me that shooting was a dangerous sport. Interestingly, since he stated that, he got into at least two nasty bike crashes, and his wife had to be helecopter-lifted due to a bicycle crash. About me? I have shot tens of thousands of rounds of ammo in my life, and continue to do so, and have yet to have an accident. Needless to say, my co-worker no longer brings up this issue. ;)

To say that shooting is dangerous as compared to riding a bike is nuts, and racing a bicycle is far worse.

To race a road bike at 40-55 mph with nothing on that can really protect you is nuts... I know, I did it for 30+ years ....

and I may go do it again

nice. i'm getting back in to trail riding. trail i used to ride was turned into shopping center, hoping to find something as cool as it was :(

Man, I have gotten back into the cycling thing again. Mostly Mt. Biking, but either works great for the mind, soul and body. Been keeping up with the "Tour" as well. Amazing bunch of athletes for sure...

Great pic Tony! From ESPN? Tour's official page? American coverage of that race sucks. :grumpy:

Jeremy, I don't know, I destroyed an Ironhorse DH bike in a season, and tore my hand up pretty good dropping a road gap into a chute in pouring rain on a practice downhill run at Snowshoe Norba Nationals WV. I sat out the races the rest of the weekend with my hand in a sling.

But to backup what tony said, road races can be vicious and I have been closer to getting into brawls during a road race than any other event. there are some real aholes in that.

Yes it is a PACK THING

And another similarity is that if you ask an old racer about some old controversy or history the answer you get is...

" Well that was way too many Belgian cocktails and EPO doses ago."

Lets drink! We can all compete at that!!!! :D

..........and after you are drunk, I'll take your knives........BBBBBBBWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAHHHHHAAAAAAAAA!

I think 40mph+ is downhill. Average flat speed for the pros on the flats is just under 30 mph. They get going that fast by drafting to cut the wind and being really, really fit.

Cycling is certainly more dangerous than shooting. The range environment is much more controlled. It would be interesting to compare the suicide rates between top cyclists and top shooters - since one of oft-cited firearm dangers is higher suicide rate. I'd bet shooters come out better there, too, since shooting is such a focused mental sport while cycling has more rewards for impulsiveness and big egos.

Yes you are right that the average speed over a flat stage (100-130 miles) is right at around 26-27 mph.

That photo is of a sprint finish at the Tour, the sprints at the finishes of the flat stages are at over 40 mph.

But the real impressive one is the individual time trial. The one that happened a few days ago was won at an average speed of 30.7 mph.

I remember 40 & 50 mile rides for the fresh air and camaraderie but a head on collision in my pick-up left my knees on no shape for cycling. I find it's much safer behind the muzzle of a gun than behind the wheel of a motor vehicle.

actually, they can and do hit 40-50 mph on the final 500 meters on a flat sprint to the finish. They will get lead out at 40+mph and when they sprint for the finish, they are doing well over 40 mph. But the pros on flats average under 30 typically. Most race stages average mid to high 20's. Which is very fast.

Thanks to Jeff Cooper, it is now impossible for me to intentionally shoot myself, since I can't get a proper sight picture.
