Things that nest and lids that fit.

Hi All,

I saw a similar thread from another forum many years ago that discussed this topic, and a quick search determined that maybe it'd be worth bringing up here...

In my quest to get a lighter, more compact load out, I want to get some thoughts from you all on things that nest into other things, objects that can function in more than one role without taking up much space, things that can function as a lid or container while also doubling as something else.

For example...

**A 32 oz nalgene bottle or a 40 oz klean kanteen have similar dimensions and both will nest into a GSI glacier cup ($12.95) for a very compact water boiling system.
**A Vargo hexagon stove will fit into the back pocket of most mens jeans.
**A jetboil and spare fuel canister will fit into a 10x4 water bottle pouch from maxpedition, condor, and others make something similar.
**An M-16 mag pouch is a great size for an altoids tin and firesteel, with room for additional small goodies if needed.

If you have any similar experience with other things, post them here so we can have a great resource and help each other out. I find this sort of information invaluable.

The snowpeak 700 pot fits a klean kanteen 40oz perfectly. The small yellow guyot squishy bowl that comes with the 700ml pot (in the solo kit) nests on the bottom of the 700, & it all fits nicely in the ll bean neoprene cover made for the 40oz. Sometimes I'll add a fish hook degorger for a bail to boil in the kanteen.

I store my primus stove & lighter, in a coleman soft padded case & it fits neatly inside one of my MSR pots. While in the Army, i used clean socks to keep my stuff from rattling inside my mess kit & stuff.

A single burner, Coleman 535 Dual Fuel stove stores neatly in a red plastic Folgers coffee can. The can makes for a useful bucket or small basin.

This is pretty bulky for backpacking, but great for motorcycle camping.

I have a snow peak ti solo cook kit that came with a mesh bag. I put a bic lighter, pocket rocket, handkerchief, and a small twig (for lifting the pot while boiling) inside the pot. This all goes in the mesh bag with a plastic spork and a fuel cannister. When I cinch it up I have a nice, compact package for cooking. That bag goes into a larger ditty bag with coffee, hot chocolate, oatmeal, and whatever freeze dried meals I am carrying. I keep my water filter and purification tablets in another smaller ditty bag, and then odds and ends (fire making stuff, SAK, hank of para cord, and other necessities) in another.

condor bottle pouch 10" X 4" inside Stanley cook set with cup, spirit alcohol burner, spork. GSI cup nested on bottom. Small round lidded tupperware on bottom of pouch with tinder, esbit tabs etc. Pouch on the holder holds cleaning pad, esbit combo stove for tabs and alcohol burner, matches, and altoids tin kit. great piece of gear. all of my cooking and cleaning up fits in this one pouch.

I just grabbed a Coleman Max cookset on a whim and ordered a Condor 10x4 bottle holder. I am going to try and combine the smaller pieces of the cookset with my SS Guyot and make a bottle-based kit.

One of the things that has always dissatisfied me about the usual psk setups is the lack of a cooking or water storage vessel.

I am looking to set up a pretty compact kit bag in either a 10x4 water bottle pouch from maxpedition or the 12x5... not sure which size yet, but in it I will have the following....

*40 oz klean kanteen
*GSI cooking cup (nested with the klean kanteen)
*spork
*microfiber towel
*vargo hexagon wood stove (great piece of gear, BTW)
*fire steel
*tinder
*wire snares and paracord
*if I go with the 12X5 water bottle bag, I will include my tarp as well.

The 12X5 set up, while a little bulkier, will cover fire, cooking, water purification, shelter, and some aspects of food (snares) in a bag the size of a roll of paper towel. This will always come with on trips big or small. Bigger trips will result in more gear in my pack.

Guillamo I'd like to see that review...

Diced- sounds like a great set up!

The can top from the 400g Pirouline artisan rolled wafers acts as a perfect pot-top for the GSI glacier cup.

In my new Condor 10x4, I can fit a Guyot with a GSI cup on the bottom and the small cup from a Coleman Max cookset on the top.

Those inexpensive match cases from the largest chain store cost $1.00 and they hold 2 CR123A batteries perfectly

This isn't exactly nesting but this folding bowl will fold flat and take up very little space in the pack

It can be a cutting board

Or you can eat out of it

Also this little cooking pot has a tight fitting lid and I stow as much of my food as I can inside it when I'm carrying it.

Usually I do not bring a stove, but this little stove will fit inside the cook pot. (although on that trip in the picture I took a difft cook pot :)
