K i think i got this right. in my head and with books an internet ive been tring to figure out a dagger. while waiting for some money for a forge i figure i can put some stuff on paper. so i figure its easy

step 1 ) tip of course

step 2) draw the tip back nice and far depending on what you want the daggers
finel look to be like.

step 3) for me is a decortive 1/4 moon shape near where the guard would lock in place.

step 4) the bevel. this being the hardest part but tyhe 50$ knife book does show a dagger bevel method

this is a simple sketch i did

now just need to know if ive got this idea right in my head or if im missing something.

Thanks Vinny :D :D

Hey!!! Mace did one like that at the last HI I had here. Well!!! It may have been a couple of HI's before????

Well, it looks like you have the right idea, but when you start trying to pull that tip back, you may become frustrated with a little thing called "bird-mouth".

Do yourself a favor and grind a radius on the "tip-end" prior to beginning the forging process. (just removing those square corners).

It is very "do-able", but takes time, practice, and a danged good set of tongs to hold that steel when you are trying to bring that point back using the edge of the anvil.

Best advice............ Find a blade smith in your area......... Ask if you can watch......... Ask lots of questions......... Pay attention........... Be prepared to get frustrated......... Do not give up........ Search these forums.... there are tons of info out there..... Attend any "hammer-in" that you can.... Watch and learn - Ask and learn - Do and learn more.

Good luck.

I've only messed around with daggers a little bit, and never forged one, but I would suggest you save the shoulders back by the tang for the grinder. Reason being when you go to grind your bevels you have 4 plunge lines to line up. Leaving the rounded shoulders till last gives you a little extra material to work with on the plunge without shortening the ricasso too much.

Vin,
You did a good job figuring it out in your head. And the sketch is a nice touch. Now come up to my shop this week and make one. I just forged out two large kriss daggers the last couple of days.
