want super thin translucent fatwood shavings? Want to maximize the amount of shavings you get out of a piece of fatwood? want shavings that start with the tinest spark?

grab a small woodworking hand plane, hone and strop the blade, and set the blade to cut the tinest amount.

its oily with flammable resin!!!!

Granted one wouldn't carry a plane into the woods (maybe a tiny violin makers plane.....) but one can prep a baggie full before a hike........

I think this is kinda cool. Rocking the cotton balls with vaseline in my ESEE fire kit storage area...but that would really use the space better and get more fire starting time out of it

Thats a pretty good idea. I bet a small ziplock of that stuff weighs next to nothing.

got a wicked pic of the firesteel spark still sparking in the second pic! this stuff went up like napalm

Cool I tried something similar with a wood rasp... Was pretty good !! Will have to dig out one of my planes and try this...

Thanks !!

^ email me you mailing address. Both you and Spyker (from Singapore) will receive some premium BC Canada fatwood!

I'm really thinking you should see someone about your fatwood obsession Bushy, I thought I was bad !!!!

I just carry a stick of fatwood with my firesteel and i scrape a quarter sized pile of it with the striker that comes with the firesteel....*knife edge works too* works every time and you geet the tiniest little shavings ive ever seen. They light very very easy.

I went out to where the city grinds up all the trees that people haul out, They run it all through a chipper/grinder. I scooped up about five, five gallon buckets full and set them up on a shelf in the garage and let it dry. That was a couple years ago. It is just perfect now for fire starter.

quick easy shavings....a pencil sharpener.

I carry one in my tinder kit at all times.
