I picked up a USGI Gore-Tex Bivy with a few minor flaws for a couple bucks and would like to use the fabric to make something. I already have another Milspec Bivy in great shape and one Outdoor Research Bivy, otherwise I would fix it. However, don't have any really great ideas for a semi-permeable waterproof membrane fabric. I've considered a Hat, gloves, and socks, but none of those appeal to me or seem like a worthwhile use of the fabric. So, with roughly the amount of fabric of a bivy sack, what should I make?

if you have any scraps left after the primary project, a waterproof bandana, that could double as a seamless bota bag to transport water, but EDC'd in pocket

first post here

few things if you like winter camping,
i know u did not want to do this but goretek socks are amazing, im in the military they are amazing, makes life better
or if you are real savvy make a undercoat oout of it, also another great thing

over mitts might be a worthy project- a windproof/waterproof over mitt is just about mandatory for winter backcountry travel

I'd second the pack cover. You'll get years and years of use outta one.

Make it a little big so you can use it to stand on in snow/mud/whatever to keep the granola off yer clean socks.

After that, i'd make sleeping bag case for that space in my pack (otherwise i use a heavy-duty 35 gal. leaf bag.

Gortex is expensive. Coated nylon is not. The only real advantage Gortex offers over coated nylon (to justify that expense) is that Gortex breaths. It would be a waste to use it to protect a gun or backpack. Gortex is for people. (Unless I'm missing something.)

When I wear my jacket w/o rain pants my thighs get wet from water dripping off the jacket.(or tall grass wetting my pants) More of a nuisance than anything, but not so much that i have waterproof/breathable shell pants.

Some chaps may be a minimal solution to seldom needed garment where I live.

Then what would you suggest? The op already said he didn't want a hat/ hat linear or socks witch is what I was going to suggest. So what do you think would be a more worthwhile project?

quick kill- I'm sorry. I wasn't trying to pick a fight. It just seems like a waste to use an expensive specialty fabric when an inexpensive fabric will work just as well. If the op doesn't want to use the Gortex for a project that would take advantage of the fabric's ability to breath, then I don't have a good suggestion. It just seems like a waste. If it were me, I'd set it aside until I could use it to its full advantage.

Really, quick kill, I didn't mean to pick on your suggestion. Sorry if I offended. :)

Scott free- no offence taken, I genuinely wanted to know what your suggestion would be. I wasn't trying to come across as an a$$. Just trying to get more contributions to the thread.
