I aquired this little guy a bit ago and I think it might be good for cleaning trout. What do you think? It's shaving sharp, so I know that's not an issue.

Hi Dave,

The 491 is called the ErgoHunter Small Game. You can get them in three different styles, Select, Avid, Pro. Your's is the Avid model. I think that will make a fine fish cleaner, post some photo's of that in action.

I think it will too jb, it fits my hand real well and I think the shorter blade will work well. I went with the Avid because I just can't abide the rubber handles on the Pro. I may regret that when my hands are covered in fish slime.

Something that bugs me some and makes me glad that I got this one is that for 2010 the Avid has an all rubber handle and a nylon sheath. No more "rosewood". :thumbdn:
The 2010 "Rubber" Avid is $10 less than last years "Rosewood", but I'd gladly pay the difference just for the leather sheath alone.

What a neat knife design, it looks like it is versatile to more than fish cleaning, and good to see they are offering a version of the good old flap-snap sheath. I have always liked those and have one for my pathfinder. Things are looking up!

:(

And here I was just hoping the pics on Bucks website were wrong...
I was really liking that rosewood handle. The rubber is also a turn off for me.... Oh well! There will be more nice ones in 2011 :D

And to get back on topic :D I think that will make a great knife for trout or squirrels.... grouse, doves!!!! Neat design, thats for sure!

That looks like a great little knife, from cleaning fish to peeling potatoes, thats about the type of knife i'd want for those things, looks like a perfect shaped handle for choking up while peeling veggies and close detail trimming on meat /fish.I say its gonna work nicely.

Dave , I bet it will clean those trout just fine. Now lets see some fish pic's.

I'm sure it's going to work fine, but I plan on taking several knives to try out. My brother and I are meeting up with two of our cousins at the lake for 5 days and I'm going to take some new Bucks to give the guys. I'll take a small selection so that they will have a choice.

Pictures of the fish (if any) will have to wait until I get back which will be around June 8th.

You are very generous Dave! Thats a great idea! Sounds like a great time also!! How long do you guys head out for? Pics will be highly anticipated! :D

I don't have my catalog here, but I just checked Bucks website, they still have the 491RWS (rosewood/leather) listed along with the 491BKS (plastic/nylon) Maybe its not to late for a rosewood?

I really love the fact that Buck is branching out and not only using different steels, but they seem to have also been trying out more blade shapes in recent years! Way to go Buck!!!

We will get there the afternoon of the 31st and leave the 4th. We've been there 3 times in the past and always stayed a full week, but we realized that we were getting burned out before it was time to leave. This time we're just going for 3 full fishing days and then go on to another cousin's for 3 days. He lives nearly right on top of a nice lake and there are several good trout streams close by.

The lake we are go to is called Pinecrest and it's a very pretty place, just a little bit west of Yosemite.

I'll probably let the guys choose between the Founders Edition 110's and some Vantage Avids I have. I may take a couple of Bucklite Max (large) along too in case their tastes run to a lighter knife.
Here's the lake.

If I was a Trout I'd be dang proud to get cleaned by that knife! That is one great knife and surely would do an excellent job.You know the rubber handles are a big turn off to me too. They do serve a purpose in some situations like maybe a dive knife. This maybe a little off topic but a few months ago I had to search this guy from Mexico,he was with his wife.He was relucktant to to empty one of his pockets. When he did, man the fight was on! He had three small RUBBER items sealed in foil. I thought his wife was gonna kill him, guess she was on the pill. LOL Thanks again for the photos.
