I was wondering what I should look for when purchasing one.. I've read been reading around here.. So how should the liner lock stop, what is the "spine whack test"?? What else should I check, look at/for when purchasing....
Thanks

When locked in the fully open position the blade shouldn't have any play, i.e., it should feel like a fixed blade knife.

The spine whack test is a way to determine the reliability of the liner lock. It is done by carefully holding the knife and tapping the spine of the fully open blade against a solid surface.

One caveat need to be kept in mind: make sure your fingers are not in the way of the blade should it close!

You should also check to see how well the liner lock engages the tang of the blade.

thanks for that info..Is there anything else I should check, liners, screws, etc.?? Again thanks..

Hello Newbie83. I just bought a Commander a week ago. On mine, the liner lock just barely blocked a small part of the back of the blade. It takes a bit of breaking in. Rub the back the blade where the liner lock blocks it with the point of a no. 2 lead pencil and lock and unlock it over and over for a couple of minutes. It does not take very long before all of the liner surface is blocking against the blade. It is a very tight knife, but tightness is good because as was said above, it should feel like a fixed blade knife. It also has to smooth out a bit from use before you can easily unlock blade, but to me this is good because the last thing you want is for the thing to unlock and let the blade close on your fingers when you don't want it to close.

Are you looking for a chisel grind or v grind on the blade edge? I got a chisel grind. I haven't had to sharpen it yet but don't think it will be too difficult and that edge is wickedly sharp.

I also did not get any serated edge on the blade. I can't sharpen those things.

Hope you enjoy your Commander and let me know about it.

Nolan

i havent seen many funky commanders in the last few yrs really, i think maybe '01 or so was a bad yr but all the '03s and up i have seen have been 100%.

Been using a recent comm for a year now and no probs since the first few weeks when I was getting used to the liner lock.

Trick is, you gotta get used to knowing when the liner lock is OK or when it is not. When the linerlock ain't wedging solidly against the tang, you gotta do something about it. Read back how I dealt with mine in this forum.

Is good knife, seemed expensive at first, then after sometime I realized it's worth it.

What other knife can disassemble for total cleaning and our own adjustment/tweaking the lock and also can just adjust pivot screw with thumbnail when assembled?

Got another question..Do the 2003 and older commanders have 3 screws, while the 2004 and newer commanders have only 2 screws??????

My 2005 comm is held closed by 4 screws(2 screws on each side) at the back and the pivot screw in front.

I just bought a Commander (Year 2006) and it feels "beefier" than the others I've seen at knife shops. Has Emerson beefed up this knife at all? If anyone knows, email me at jkroedman@yahoo.com. Thanks.

PS- I just bought it and though it was REALLY stiff the first week I had it (my thumb almost fell off), it has smoothed out nicely now. Ive had this knife for about three weeks now, and it is smooth as butter now. Just keep playing with the knife...you will smooth out the rough spots.
