Thinking about a CRK. I have one question.

I am saving up to take the dive into CRK and I vaguely remember something about removing the lanyard. I cannot remember which model 21 or 25. Anyways I remember something about a problem with removing the lanyard and the pin not staying in place if the lanyard is removed. Am I just imagining things or is this a legitimate thing? If so which model? Thank you very much everyone.

Edit: I guess I have more than one question. :D To remove the lanyard will I have to cut it off? Is the disassemble are reassembly fool proof with CRK's because of the tight tolerances? Thanks again everyone.

I think this would be both but can only vouch for it on the 21 as I just bought one and had this issue myself. Not a big deal but it would have been cool if the pin could stay in. I only say that as I like the aesthetic contrast the blue pin creates but I'm not a huge lanyard fan. Like I said though, not a real issue at all. Still ABSOLUTELY love my sebenza. To be honest, the 21 and 25 are mostly small differences such as slightly different grind with a less pronounced hollow grind on the 25 (forget the exact name but just google it) and the grip style on the 25 is different. Both great knives and I would try handling before buying if able. Best of luck!

I know exactly how you feel. I really like the aesthetic contrast as well, but hate lanyards.

So you just removed the pin and everything is good without it?

This kind of bums me out as if I am going to spend that kind of cash I want the pin in without the lanyard. It sounds very minor to most i'm sure, but it could quite literally be a deal breaker for me. I like the handle shape of the 21 better as well.

I wish I could handle them before buying, but that is not a option as I do not know anyone that owns one and have no idea of ANY store that carries them.

I simply untied the lanyard, and tied it right back in It's original configuration immediately. It pretty much maintained It's shape making it very easy to re-tie it.

The small will stay in without the lanyard, but it'll rattle. The large will fall out without the lanyard. I fix both these problems by placing a small piece of lanyard in the pin and burning both ends. Works perfectly.

Great idea!
I lost my pin when I removed the lanyard. Major n00b move on my part.

For many , many years there were no pins, just cord, so a Sebenza without pin is not unusual. You can untie the lanyard and slip the pin out or disassemble the knife and remove the pin with lanyard still tied. As stated- on the small the pin will stay in if you just untie the lanyard.

I use the burnt lanyard trick on mine. I was hesitant because I thought the burnt ends would be an eye soar, but I was wrong. I never notice it.

I much prefer the lanyard without the pin, I remove them on all my larges. If there is no pin, no problem. The burned end cord works fine if you prefer the pin.

CRK is so easy to take apart and put together. I prefer my 21 with no lanyard pin although I do think the pin and lanyard look really classy.

Thank you everyone for the great info. I have another question. How does the lanyard hold the pin in? I have looked at pictures and I cannot tell. I'm sure it is something very simple and once you can actually look at one you will understand, but from the pictures I have seem it makes no sense.

The lanyard pin has a hole in it that the lanyard goes though. If you don't like lanyards I would go for the 25. With the 25 you can go without a lanyard and it won't leave an empty hole. The 25 is actually a nice upgrade from the 21.

You have a hole in each scale that the pin fits into(pin stops at outside of both scales). when the cord is removed the pin can slide through either scale through the hole. With the cord on(Through the pin), the pin can't slide due to the cord blocking the scale hole(To get the pin out you would have to pull the whole lanyard through the small scale whole, and that isn't going to happen without magic)

Hope that makes sense-it is extremely simple, but a little lengthy to explain

The pin is not held by the lanyard. Pin is trapped by scales, removed by unscrewing pivot & smaller screws. Lanyard can be present with pin, or pin can remain w/out cord.

That makes perfect sense. I am now confused though since the next post is saying the pin is trapped by the scales which would contradict what you just told me.

Is this a difference between the 21 and 25?

That is how the small works , but on the large the pin can be removed without disassembly
So on the small the pin can only be removed by taking apart the knife(with or without cord removal)
On the large the pin can be removed by removing the lanyard cord and sliding the pin out or by taking apart the knife(no need to remove cord)

Ah ok. Thank you so much everyone for the great info.

I just have to decide on large vs small and 21 vs 25. :D
