Hey All,

Do I need any new custom knives in 2010? Heck no! Can I resist the urge to order one? Heck no! ;)

For a while now - ever since pitdog posted a 'let's see some crazy designs' thread in W&SS - I have been contemplating a custom JK hiking knife with a wide blade, pleasing lines, and a (gasp!) combo grind. Now, I have never seen a knife with a grind quite like this. The closest one out there would have to be the Mora 2000, which I think is an effective proof of concept.

Here's my latest sketch: (I'm thinking of calling it the Kolapore Hiker or the Metcalfe Hiker, in honour of two of my favourite spots on the Bruce Trail - or possible the Bonbe Hiker, just to give a shout out to the W&SS chat regulars)

The OAL is about 10.5", and the blade (tip to the closest point on the handle scales) would be about 5.5". Max height is about 2". I'm thinking that 3/8 stock would work.

The 2" of the blade closest to the handle would be scandi ground, with the area above being left flat (and rough finished!). After 2", the blade would transition to John's usual grind. As you can see, the midline of the knife travels from end to end, down the centre of the handle, which would give it a useful point that still has a bit of belly.

I like to use a scandi for making fuzz sticks, cutting notches, and other fine woodworking tasks, but I like a convex or flat grind for food prep, light chopping, and general cutting. This model would give me a bit of both in the same package. Now, there are those who will argue that I should just carry two knives, so as not to compromise the features of either. I agree - this is a good approach, and it is the one I have used for years. But, dammit, I want a combo-ground scandi.

So, what do you guys think? Sound interesting? Utter madness? I'm confident that John could pull it off.

All the best,

- Mike

Edited to add: John, if this thing looks do-able, put me down for a spot in March!

I've seen something like that on a custom knife someplace, I just don't remember where. Also, I've seen that done on machetes as a mod. Good concept, definitely--it looks useful (the handle scales look a bit pointy on both ends, though) and the grinds definitely make it versatile. I would think he would just need to do the scandi grind first, and at a shallower angle than the convex, and then the convex itself would be as-normal. I'm not a knifemaker, though, so that's pure speculation :P. I'm interested to see what John thinks of it.

I think it's a great idea. The blade shape looks similar to the one below that I designed a while back. I hope you mean 3/16" stock though and not 3/8" like you put...that would be one tank of a blade !

Ha! Yeah, 3/16". That was quite the typo. 3/8 would be a beast! I might get some macho points for lugging around a scandi-ground prybar, mind you ... :D

It sure does bear some resemblance to your design! My primary inspiration was the Grohmann #4, which has a similar, though slimmer, blade shape.

All the best,

That 3/8" had me a little worried! I plan on getting out to the shop tomorrow to do a "practice grind" of this style grind. We got a new puppy yesterday, so I`m spending today with it while my wife is at work, so he can get used to the other dogs. The way Noah described is exactly how I plan on doing it, and I have absolutely no doubt I can do it.

Right on, John! I'm stoked about this one.

I was thinking of going with a natural handle for this one - perhaps maple (with brass pins). A leather pouch sheath would compliment it well.

Congrats on the new puppy, by the way! It looks adorable.

All the best,

- Mike

I tried it on a scrap blade this morning, it woks out fine. Here is a really bad pic.

This is why I love JK Knives - You can go from crazy idea to workable experiment in a matter of days, and from there to a finished product in a few months. Awesome.

Thanks for testing the idea out, John! It looks great.

I'm really looking forward to this one.

All the best,

- Mike

Should I hold the spot for you in late March? If so, email me for price.

Well guys, I'm moving forward with this one! I should have it in hand just as as things are starting to thaw out in my neck of the woods, and I will most definitely post pics and reviews. Thanks for the comments and design input!

Best,

- Mike

This will be VERY interesting to see! It kind of looks like a hybrid-grind tactical nessmuk

I`ll be starting on this tomorrow, and will be doing a "Making Of" thread on it.

I have been excited about this idea for a long time now, and I'm stoked to see it coming to fruition.

As always, I'm floored by Stomper's commitment to dialogue and customer input. What a great experience

All the best,

- Mike

I can't wait to see the WIP thread! This is such a cool design, it definitely deserves to come to life, and we all know that John will do a great job of it
