Thinking about a Ranger...

I know Justin's knives were popular around here, and I was wondering if anyone has tried his new knives from Ontario Knives?

I am tossing around the idea of picking up an RD6 or maybe one of the Afghan knives. They look to be priced in line with Beckers.

Anyone have a review?

I owned a RD6 back when Justin was still doing them, but the Ontario ones look like they are exactly the same. If you want a knife that is hell for stout, can be brutalized with no ill effect, are relatively inexpensive and are very heavy, they are the way to go.

i've seen some very beautiful customs that justin did for RD9's.

personally... i dont support ontario knife because of some of their business practices.

i suggest trying to grab one made by justin himself... or look for a trade. but thats totally up to you.

politics aside. his knives are supposed to be fantastic, fit and finish but also performance as well.

between the two i'd rather take the RD6.

I have an RD6 from several years ago before Ontario came into the picture. I can't comment on the new line. But, I <3 my RD6. It's insanely tough.

The Rangers are great knives.. Tough and sharp. The coating started coming off my RD7 the first time I took it in the woods, but on a user like a Ranger, its a non-issue IMHO.. The Rangers do dress up nice too....

I know there are a lot of folks here that don't like Ontario because of the RAT cutlery thing, and don't get me wrong, I love my RC-3, RC-4 and will hopefully be loving an Izula very soon, but at this price point there is no RAT cutlery knife available. I will probably order a BK2 and a BK7 before I would buy a Ranger knife, but I was just looking for some input...

I have both and I think you can't go too far wrong with either... For the larger blade (RD7), I bought the Ranger because I noted that a lot of the makers seem to choose 5160 for their choppers....

I love my Rangers. I've got an RD6 and an RD9. Neither of them were made by Ontario though so I can't comment on those. I have seen a few of Justin's knives on the forums lately for a good price. You might want to look around a bit. I just got another Ranger in the mail today. A custom EDC :)

I picked up one of the new RD9s. I put some homemade Mycarta slabs on it and I put a satin finish all around the spine after these pictures were taken. This is my first attempt at both Mycarta and handles making but I thought it turned out ok. What the handles lack in looks they make up for in feel.

The knife itself is a beast. I will say though that this is my first chopper so I not really qualified to make any comparisons. My largest knives prior were a BK7 and currently an RC-6. My edge had an ever so slight wave in the grind but I bought this knife to be used so it doesn't bother me. I haven't had a chance to use it much but I need to find and excuse.

New with the rest of the bunch. Yes, I know it's knife blasphemy to have RC and Ontario knives in the same picture.

You may want to read this post before sending your business to Ontario. Seems to me they are a bunch of crooks, picking on a smaller company that cannot compete with their dirtbag lawyers. Well... that is my take anyway. ;)

Also this thread... Read through these and choose to do business with them if you wish. I won't.

If you're referring to that EDC, yes it has a lot of heft :) I'm not really used to it in a smaller knife but I'm looking forward to putting it through its paces.

I'd rather save my money and give it to a company I can trust.
