ok Im thinking about pulling the trigger on a ZDP shallot, but im wondering if theres anything else out there I should look at also?? I know theres spydercos that have a ZDP blade, but I cant get over the shape of their blades, I just do not like them, but I still may have to try one.

I also like some of the kershaw composite blade D2 knives.

anything else out there I should be looking at in that price range?

already have one :). its currently my EDC. thats why im thinking I may want to try something else other than a shallot, but then again I do really like the shallot.

I don't care for the shallot because of the all steel handle's but I still might get one in S110V just because. The JYD-II CB is a awsome blade well worth looking at.

It all depends on your use's and what you like.

JYD II's are good, so's the R.A.M., although it's not available in the more "exotic" steels (14C28N is no slouch, though). And then there's the Speed Bump.

why don't you try the caly3. Give it a chance. You may be surprised once you actually handle one.

well ill have to look at one first, but Ill take a look.

maybe ill take a look at a JYD, its interesting and D2. I like the ram, but I will hold off on it for a while on one of those.

I do have a question about the bump, the spec is double the price of the speed. is s30v and g10 really that much more expensive. I really like a tyrade, but im not ready to spend 200 on a knife yet.

Give that JYDII Composite a good look. I got my son one at Christmas, and then got him a STR deep carry, foldover clip to replace the big and wide stock clip and it has been his most carried knife ever since. Everytime someone ask about a folder it seems that the spyderco Caly comes up. Never had one but with it menntiioned so often it must be a great knife!

i am.

whats the STR deep carry?? where can I find them?

Stop thinking about it and get one while you can. They were a limited run 1100ish? if I remember right. They are thinner and lighter than s110v or the reg. Shallot. I see less and less of them everyday on the bay. They are also going for more than they were a month ago. Get one while you can. Also from Kershaw there is a TI Mini Cyclone in zdp-189 they are going for over 200 now, I think one went for over 250 a while back. Also the Leek TI zdp-189 they can be had for around 130 if you are lucky. And I was lucky last month.:D

I suspect the Caly 3 is a fine knife, I'd even consider it if...it wasn't so ugly. Sorry, but the short blade, long handle thing doesn't work for me. Then, my eye picks out how wide the blade is in respect to other proportions, and that skews things too. Finally, the big ol' hole in the blade (actually, it's not so much the hole as the hump in the spine to accommodate it) ruins it for me. Try as I might, I just cannot get into Spyderco knives, even when the left side of my brain is screaming "VG-10! S90V! H1!" I just cannot do it, Cap'n!

I'll argue to the death how great the Sharpmaker is; their knives? Not so much.

Once you get over the looks (I like the looks a lot now after at first thinking they look funny) and use the knife the ergos and thin edged cutting ability really start to make those Spydercos look beautiful!

OP.. have you ever used spyderco's before? I myself needed convincing. I thought they were ugly and they felt weird in the hand. After using one for about a month... I was totally sold. Spryderco's blades may not look fantastic, but they are very functional.

Not to worry, riffraff, I have all the time in the world to convert you to the dark side. ;)

I used to think the exact same thing...

Re Spydercos, I wasn't a fan... then I got an S30V Native as a gift from my wife... wow. I got a backup, the W-W price was attractive and my wife new I wanted another one. I've looked at others at a B&M gun/knife store - just haven't seen one I like. Now Kershaws, they are different. I recently bought a Zing at W-W - super little carry knife. I love my old and new (S30V) Blurs. I keep looking at the ZDP Shallot. Can't seem to order one. But... my favorite of the last few months are the JYDII CBs, both the regular one my wife shocked me with at Christmas, with it's black featureless G10 handles, and the factory second/refurb/short run (Note the four 'X' marks.) I bought that has grey G10 with their familiar JYD fuselage pattern. Neat! Both came as shavers - andhave been fantastic knives thus far.

PS Despite my paying more for my warranty-less grey 1725CB from a seller who didn't indicate it was a 'second' - it is fine and I carry it more!
