Hi guys, thinking about buying An Al Mar Heavy Duty Eagle folder for a daily user, love to here your thoughts good or bad, especially about AUS-8 steel, and its says it has an 'adjustable action',...whats that?. Cheers Kris,.

I've got one of each (the HD and the Ultralight) both with talon blades.
I don't know what the adjustable action is.

Al Mar makes exceptionally high quality fit and finish blades with
what is essentially out of date steel.

The AUS-8 is very sharp, but I imagine it will need to be touched up
somewhat more frequently.

I love mine, the HD is more of a safe queen,
I EDC the ultralight frequently.

Best letter opener that I own,
the HD is considerably more robust.

I probably won't buy another Al Mar
until they bring their steel up to date.

I like their stuff so much, I don't want
to find myself having to replace it all with
3V or whatever one day, so I'll just wait.

But that said I bought these two in just the past 90 days,
so there are certain models you just have to go ahead and get now.

I also own a SERE 2000 and it is a precision tank.

I have a couple of the older Al Mar knives (Ultralights). As Maniacal Pete said, excellent fit and finish. The AUS-8 steel has performed well for me, most likely because of good cutting geometry and heat treat. I have no complaints about it.

Everything I've ever wanted in a folder comes together in the Al Mar Shrike. I have 8...just in case they quit making them.

I have several Al Mars in both AUS 8 and vg-10. Either steel works just fine and holds an edge for an acceptable period of time. I've dressed several deer without stopping to sharpen my SERE 2000 and it did just fine. Unless your using your knife all day long, and in that case you're probably better served with a razor knife, I wouldn't worry too much about AUS 8 being an 'older' steel. I agree that the fit and finish on an AL Mar is consistently excellent. You'd be hard pressed to find the same level of f/f on another brand's knife at the same price point.

I don't have a heavy duty, but I have an ultralight. It's a great EDC knife. Big enough for some serious cutting, but not too bulky. The AUS-8 is fine unless you use it constantly like others have said. Plus it sharpens very easily. The only downsides to me are that the pocket clip could be a deeper carry, like my SERE 2000. Also the micarta on the ultralight is a bit slick, but the heavy duty that you are looking at has G-10 I believe.

I would agree that Al Mar fit and finish is top-notch. The only one I currently own is the SERE 2000 and it is an excellent knife. Smoothest deployment I have and locks up very, very tight.

I used to own an Eagle Ultralight but I gifted it to a friend who was moving. It was a great knife but a bit thin for my preferences, I like a more substantial folder like the SERE 2000. I really want an Al Mar Nomad, almost pulled the trigger on the Streamlight/Al Mar anniversary flashlight/knife combo but I wasn't able to justify it, maybe in a few weeks..
