Thinking about buying a cheap china knife

Wanting to pick up another knife, but instead of spending a ton of money like I did last month, I think I want to try a china knockoff.

If you had to pick, which one would you go with? (might do both, but want to try just one first)

This one is obviously a Strider knockoff, it's $8 shipped.

And this one seems to be a benchmade knockoff, it's $13

And before someone says it, I know these are knock off knives of real production knives. The real deals are much more expensive, and this is a good way to get a feel for the general size/design. Who knows, if I like it enough I might actually buy a real version of either one ;)

For $8 it's probably so bad at imitating the real thing it'll probably turn you off to the real thing.

Obviously it's not going to be the same quality, I understand that. But many say that the sanrenmu chinese knives are decent quality, and you can't really go wrong for the price. I'll probably wind up giving it away after a few days of use/messing with anyways.

Hell... for $8 it's not a big deal if it breaks. Just don't go out to eat one night and eat at home, and you just saved more than $8 by doing so. :D

I would recommend a Bee. L02 or L05 in particular.

If you go with SRM, the 710 and 909 are both nice.

Go ahead. Just don't cry or ask for sympathy if they snap on your fingers.

I've got more than a few higher quality US made knives to do hard work with.

But really, aside from the fact they're made in china and don't have the best blade steels, what is wrong with spending $8 on one of them? It's not going to hurt anything to try one, but was kindof hoping someone here might have tried out a few before. And I have been thinking about getting the SRM 710

I'd rather spend $20-30 on a china Byrd; at least you know you have Spyderco's warranty behind it. Heck, check out Kershaw's Chill.

Not a fan of the Byrd style opening holes. And I already have a Kershaw Skyline, which is a better knife of the same styling as the Chill.

I would go with the camo. The blade is coated which would help keep some rust off. In my opinion, a cheap knife like that or the ones from Mtech are cool because they look decent and you can cut whatever you want and not worry about what happens to the blade. :D

unfortunately, looks alone doesn't equate to the full expected measure of performance.
and so it is with cheaply priced knife replicas which are largely decorative and has practically no manufacturer's guarantee should it (heaven forbid!) be actually put to use as if it were a real knife...
but as some others would agree, SRM knives is a notable exception when it comes to picking a domestic chinese knife brand.

Friends don't let friends buys knives made in China (or anything else, for that matter)!

I have Spyderco and Kershaw knives made in China that work just fine...

And unfortunately it looks like the camo strider look a like is discontinued so I might just say scratch that idea and pick up another Kershaw blem or something. I'm really wanting to try out a benchmade though at some point.

If you don't mind a slipjoint then there are several brands coming out of China that have above average construction. Check out the Rough Rider lineup, the Steel Warrior lineup, and my favorite, the Hammer Brand lineup.

I've been carrying a Hammer Brand Swell Center Jack, and a Steel Warrior Cigar Whittler pattern, not at the same time, but switching between them, and have had great success with them. It's amazing how well the fit/finish is, and everyone of these I have bought have razor sharp edges out of the box.:)

If you already have quality knives why waste $8 that could go towards a real knife, its like buying a ferrari kit car built on a geo metro and driving it instead of the real ferraris in your garage... IMO

NAVY brand and the Sanrenmu are excellent knives no matter what anybody says. I own a few of each and several NAVY brand. Very high quality of build, steel is decent and I use them for edc duties and they are just fine for what I use them for. I have been wanting to try the Bee line too. The bottom line for me is econonomics. My youngest is in college now and it costs us 1800 bucks a month for his tuition. So I do not have the discretionary funds I used to. keepem sharp
