Thinking about dumping all my folders

Over the last several months I have noticed that there are no folders making it into my EDC rotation.

Instead I find myself carrying a number of small fixed Blades like the Carson F4, Camillus Mini Talon, Jones Brothers Neck Knife either in my pocket or IWB.

Does anyone else share my preference for small fixed blades (aka Neck Knives) over folders?

Currently, yes, although I go through a lot of trends.

It wowed me the first couple of times I realized "hey, I wouldn't have done that with my folder."

...but you may wanna try a small Seb. before you give up hope on folders. Besides the usual accolades (exquisite fit, finish, operation, etc.), the small Seb. is very slim in profile, easy to carry, designed to be broken down for cleaning, and sports some of the best blade steel in the cutlery industry.

I hear ya though, fixed blades are awfully nice too!

Why stop as small fixed blades? :)

I like neck knives better than folders, but I usually keep them under my shirt. Thus, a folder with a pocket clip is used more frequently when I have both on.

Just the opposite. I have just about gotten rid of all my fixed blades, with a few exceptions.

I live in California, and except for remote hiking/camping experiences, I wouldn't carry a fixed blade in public.

Unfortunately, here in CA, it is illegal to conceal a fixed blade, so you have to expose it at all times.

I like the mechanism aspect of folding knives, so even if I could carry all the fixed blades I wanted, I would still primarily carry/collect folders.

I have only a few neck knives, I like them but am not overly crazy about them. THe only one I actually carry on occasion is my Emerson La Griffe, it's the only one I find comfortable. But to me even it isn't as comfortable or convenient as a folder. As mentioned above, in CA it's illegal to carry a fixed blade concealed, so I've have to have it flopping around all over the place, and I can't do that where I work (on campuses).

I tend to enjoy folders more anyway, due to their gadget appeal and I love the different designs and modern quality.

I also really like small fb's, and have been carrying them more than folders. However I know that I change back to carrying folders more in the summer months, and summer is coming. Don't dump them all just yet. :)

Ideally fixed blade is the knife to carry. However, folders were
invented due to the carry convienice (sp) . I,too, wish that I could
carry a fixed blade ,but the urban world I live in makes it impossible.

This is a great thread. Hope it stays alive. I too am very interested in expanding my carry options. Currently, I have a Large Classic Sebbie in my pocket. However, I'm considering rotating that with a neck knife mounted to my key chain (it's a caribiner) or a small fixed blade.

I almost got a custom Bob Lay horn handle mini hunter that would have been a great carry. Small, discreet, and very attractive.

Oh well. Someday I'll get my act together.

Generally I like fixed blades, but folders have their place, especially in the city. I don't understand about the neck knives though. Even apart from the concealment issue (assuming that is not illegal where you are), how do you access them? If you are off fishing or something like that and can carry the knife outside your shirt I can understand. Neck carry can be even more convenient than belt carry. But most of the time, you carry around the neck to conceal the knife, but that makes it hard to get at! If you need the knife fast are you going to rip your shirt open?

As with other posters, I live in Ca., where concealed carry of a fb is illegal. That said, I prefer the folders for carry anyway. In any situation where I have a fb handy (at home, in the car) I'll reach for it over the folder in my pocket. But I find the folder much easier to carry, and use them with confidence when a fb isn't avaiable. Someday I may change, and prefer a fb carry, but as yet haven't found a carry system I truely prefer to a folder with a pocket clip.

I to prefer small fixed blades over folders, dont get me wrong ive got some exellant quality folders .but ive just got this absorbing, overwhelming, like for fixed blades! Anyway as ive stated many times befor i think the Emerson Lagriffe necker is prob the best design available for a backup defense knife. Some prefer larger knives ,different blade styles etc., the f4 is a good choice for utility as also the COLDSTEEL super edge & ready edge designs. You may also want to check out the AG RUSSELL HUNTERS SCALPEL three steel choices to choose from mind you they arnt top of the line but they are good users for utility purposes and cost. A few of my personal choices, as well as my personal opinion on the topic.

Like db noted above, I tend to carry small fixed blades during winter and folders during summer. Mostly a convenience sort of thing, plus my tastes just change from time to time. Depends on what I'm doing for work, too. Some places, a fixed blade is fine, others, it's more appropriate to carry a folder. Pendentive, I'd avoid the keychain-biner carry if what you're thinking is mounting a sheath to the biner. I lost a knife that way, and I'm surprised I didn't lose it more quickly.

Matthew: You use your tactical folder to cut open your shirt so you can get at your neck knife.:D :D

That said, folders still do it for me for general carry. They're convenient and easy to carry. Recently, though, I got a Dozier Agent and it's gotten more carry time than I ever thought.

I have been using my Benchmade 160 a lot in the evening and on weekends. I carry it as a pocket knife, rather than a neck knife. Since I don't carry it for defensive purposes, speed of access doesn't matter to me. It is flat, light, and just disappears in my pocket until I need it. It also has a comfortable, secure grip for its size and is easy to sharpen. There is a lot to be said for not having to think about lock strength and maintenance. However, I wouldn't want to give up my multitools, SAKs, and serrated Spydercos. I don't know of any fixed blade equivalents.
