some people say its hard to find what to eat in the woods. Has anyone watched the show " Bizarre foods with Andrew Zimmern " The stuff some people would eat.... I have learned one thing from the show. If its not rock steel or tires you can eat it fried or cooked over fire. The stuff people would eat. There is no reason for anyone to go hungry if there is anything what so ever around you   .

Some things will kill you though.

The host does not look like he ever had to "go hungry".

I will try anything once, if it is deep fried.

That is a great show but I will say I don't think I could eat half the stuff shown. Too wierd.

As a rough camper/survivalist in New England, I'll be the first to tell you that eating AOT (any old thing) is not a great idea in any environment. There are plenty of things you wouldn't think to eat but the 'guess and check' method works pretty poorly in the wild. Just ask the last guy who ate a Destroying Angel when he thought it looked a lot like a button mushroom.
That said, I never go hungry in the woods.

they say that a human can go a good while without food ..... while this may be true...it is sheer misery...I eat (at least something every 4 hours) in a real survival sit...it is most likely a temporary situation... so hopefully it'll be a matter of days before you're found or make your way out depending on your decision...There is food around that can be had without taking to much of a risk...anything from the smallest bird to lizards grasshoppers up to a deer (although highly unlikely) I have several books on edible plants that are indigenous to the regions where I spend time...I try to identify the plants in a park type scenario so I'll be close to help if something goes wrong..and my first time experimenting won't be wtshtf. (although I don not rec. this course of action for others) I also try to attend edible plant walks which are sometimes hosted by my local parks department...and a few packs of ramen noodles tucked into a back pack goes a long way.

I must admit i dont think i could eat some of the things this guy does... What i do find is the amazing things people would eat and consider it as normal food. Last night show he had some fruit i dont remember the name but he said that was the worst thing he had ever eat in his all life.
But if you do watch the show more you would notice that the worst the food taste the more spice they would add to it. Yes it seems that frying makes many other things edible. I think the show is very intresting even more so them the show with bear.

I spent 6 months in S.E. China, and it was amazing what they would eat, and how well the stuff was prepared. They don't just dump spices all over whatever and gulp it. The do use spices well, and most of the food we ate there was far superiop to what we eat here as far as taste and texture. We were warned however that many of the things we ate came from polluted areas, as they still use human feces to fertilize crops, and many of the plants, snails and bugs we were eating may have come from ditches and flooded fields.

Food? Did someone say food? Well here is a delictable little morsel. No need to even bite his head off, but you might want to club him to keep him from trying to come back up and getting away.

Enjoy.

Yeah, I spent time there too and saw some pretty gross acts of food intake. I got the impression there is nothing they wouldn't eat. The food in China tasted quite different from the Chinese food here, it all seemed to have a nasty, lardy aftertaste. Good thing we didn't always know what we were eating.

I would have to say salt that puppy down. You may waste a "calorie" or two if there is one inside there by frying it or tossing it. But being the true gentleman that I am, I insist that you go first.:D

Hi Sasha,
If "LA CA" is indeed Los Angeles California, you might find a class with Christopher Nyerges (sp ?) interesting. Based in Eagle Rock, he holds
classes / hikes in the Angeles Nat'l Forest. My family and I took one of his classes a few years ago; the salad we collected along the trail was delicious. He also covered fire making - no magnesium or gooey cotton balls either.

Regards,
Mike

Hi Catspaw yep im in los angeles. I heard about his classes but never took it yet. I did take one class about plants with an old woman and her husband. We sure ate one heck of a large salad and it was GOOOOOOOOOD.
Would you have a site to his classes???

I can managed without food for a long while, but it's not pleasant. But surviving without good tea/coffee/wine/beer THAT'S ghastly!

Sasha,

I found this via Google: http://www.christophernyerges.com/
His schedule shows a variety of classes thru the summer. I might have to do another myself; a good excuse to get out of the 'hood and into the hills...
