Thinking about getting a GEC #53 Cuban Stockman, but I have a couple questions.

One of the main things I like about it is the nail nicks for the clip and the sheepsfoot blade are both on the mark side. Another big plus would be the sheepsfoot riding lower in the frame than in most other stockman configurations.

I've got a couple questions for those that have this knife: I see the nail nick on the clip blade is quite close to the pivot end of the knife, which implies not as much leverage as normal - so I'm assuming/hoping these don't have the GEC nail buster pull to overcome ..... or, do they?

And it looks like the nail nick on the sheepsfoot could be pretty close to the spine of the clip, and the nick on the clip could be pretty close to the frame. Are you having any problems getting access to the nail nicks?

Any and all other comments/reflections on this particular knife are most welcome! Pics also! ;)

(I know there's a couple Jeff's out there (black mamba & rockgolfer) who really love this pattern and I would like to hear from you, and for sure from other owners, too)!

You are correct Coyote711, I really love this knife and it has taken its place as my edc for the foreseeable future. Mostly for the points you touched on already. I can only make comments based on the one example I have(ebony) so others views will certainly vary.

Mine certainly is not a bear trap to open. The nick being back so far on the clip does make it a hair harder to pull open then the other two. I do not find it hard to get to the nick even though it rides so low, infact the nicks are so deep and perfect on mine I have a new found love for nicks over long pulls. I have zero issues with the sheepsfoot being close to the clip and it is very easy to open.

This is not the knife for you if you like maximized blade to frame length. It is the knife for you if you enjoy bigger handle for tougher tasks, very comfortable to use in any grip and for any task I have for it. I feel it would fit in from the field to the job site and anywhere between. I am hoping funds will allow me to grab another ebony as a backup before they are all gone.

Hope my little rambling helps you out, anything else specific feel free to ask away

Oh and as of an hour ago this is the first knife I have ever made hair shaving sharp. I can make hair scream off my arm with any blade on this puppy and it just makes it that much better. I would give you the advice to stop contemplating and snatch one up :D

I no longer own a #53 Cuban Stockman but I used to have one. I remember the blades being very comfortable to open. No problems with the nail nicks and the blade pulls were firm yet very user friendly.

I think you would like this knife, Keith.

Thanks Jeff! I'm not concerned with maximum blade length for the frame size at all. I had a #53 Furtaker Trapper and didn't care for the full-length wharncliffe blade on it - much prefer a shorter sheepsfoot blade. Plus it (the wharncliffe) made for an uncomfortable grip when using the clip blade - too much curved spine sticking up from the frame. Thanks for answering my questions, and congrats on the hair poppin' edge!

I'm eyeballing the exact knife you have - Tidioute in ebony w/o serial number. I have a few other GEC's with ebony covers and really like the combo of black and silver in a knife - it says "no nonsense, old school, get-the-job-done pocket knife" to me.

Hi Rick! Thanks for your comments, too! I'm this || close to pulling the trigger - a guy can only go so long without gettin' a new knife. ;) Good to see you here my old friend!

Keith, the pulls on the #53s, whether stockman, furtaker or muskrat, are without half-stops. Firm (5-7) but very smooth and comfy to open.
I have also never found any problem getting at the nicks, either clip or sheepfoot, and I have owned 51 different #53s over the last 5 years.
I don't remember if you are a 1095 or a 440C guy, but both should still be available. Best large stockman around, IMO.

I'm sending you an email.

Knifeswapper (Mike Latham of CollectorKnives.net) has the ebonies available on his website.

Not quite halfway down this page: http://www.collectorknives.net/greateastern2.html

I've found that the pull for the #53 Stockman Knives that I have are soft for GEC knives - about a 5 to 5 1/2 on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the firmist - very practical.

The nail nicks are nicely placed and do not interfer with each other when opening various blades or combinations of blades.

I have serveral more than those pictured and the pull on all of them is in the 5 to 5 1/2 range. Although their length is 4 1/8", they make easy carry knives because of their equal, rounded, ends/bolsters and they are two-spring knives which makes them slim and contributes to their easy carry capabilities.

Ya just can't go wrong with these kinives - my .02¢

Jeff, thanks for the comments and the email! All my GEC knives so far have been 1095, but I wouldn't hesitate to try their 440C either. "Best large stockman around" is quite an endorsement - I'll take that one seriously.

Ed, thank you for the comments & pics, too! I remember seeing your "dark green" (I know that's not the official name) #53 before - great looking knife. I didn't realize you had so many 53's though - must be a great knife.

I agree 100%. I must have more ebony lol

These Gents are part of the reason I finally picked one up. You know the rest ;)

Jeff (arkansas), thank you for the email!

I pulled the trigger on an Ebony Tidioute from Mike at Collectorknives. Thanks to all who posted here with their comments & pics.

Well, your posts & pics (before tonight even) certainly contributed to my renewed interest in this knife. ;) Whole bunch of enablers around these parts! :D

Why the name Cuban Stockman I wonder? Was it commissioned by Mark Cuban perchance?

I carry 2 #53's (muskrat & cattle knife) and a #54 jack. The pulls on them are just fine. I've always assumed that given the variations GEC built on the cigar frame that it's one of their best sellers (remember I said ASSUME).

I have the same green bone Ed has and I can't ad anything more to what Jeff and Ed said and yep Jeff their 1095 is some really good stuff!

Wow, that ebony takes my breath away. I think I need to add one to my want list.

I'm pretty sure you'll be glad you did. Great knife and an even better person. Congrats!
