Thinking about getting a Labradoodle... Thoughts?

My Wife and I are considering another dog (currently have a lap dog). We have 3 young children and want a larger dog for the family. I was considering getting a Labradoodle (black) due to light shedding and overall lab tendencies. Anyone here have one? How does it interact with the family? Is it overly hyper or aggressive? I would end up taking it along on hikes and canoe trips with the kids so if you have any outdoor input that would be great also.

Thanks

I like 'doodles, but they can definitely be hyper as puppies/young dogs and their coats get matted very easily. Make sure you're willing to either spend a lot of time brushing it or spend the cash to get it groomed every 6-8 weeks.

I've known a Labradoodle in the past. Excellent dog - very sensitive and family oriented. He was an extremely calm and gentle dog, but I didn't know him when he was young.
Some of what I've read about the Labradoodle coats may be exaggerated - this guy shed a lot, from what I recall. It's perhaps a trait that varies among individual dogs, according to whether they end up with Lab or more 'Oodle.

The one’s I have had contact with are as mad as a box of frogs.Good luck.

Put it this way .had one for 2 years gave that stupid dog away !! Hyper as heck and always barking even if there was nothing there .I will never own another.!!!!

I have one and he is one of the best dogs I have ever owned. He is very calm, only barks at strangers coming to the door, doesn't shed and is great with little ones. He is actually the only calm dog I have owned and he's basically like a human, it's funny. He does have to get groomed every other month though and he has problems with ear infections. Other than that though good dog and will get another one sometime.

Have you considered a collie? If concerned about hyper behavior indoors, collies are great. Outside they run crazy and chase and jump... but bring them indoors and it's like they have an "Off" switch. And collies love kids!
They do take some grooming to prevent tangles and matting, but they don't leave hair everywhere like a lab.

We've had three collies. They're the best! Well, next to Great Pyrenees. I suppose that's why they're not called Great Collies...

Tristen. Our current collie. He's a stinker sometimes.

Joey. A big old guy that weighed 100lbs!

Lacey, a smaller girl that we temporarily fostered.

Beautiful dogs. When I was a kid the collie was my "ultimate" thanks to Lassie reruns. And they will let you know if Timmy falls in the well!

It's amazing how many people say they used to have one when they were kids. Now... there are only two in the entire town.
When we go for walks, people in cars pull over to come see us and pet a collie. :)

Cocker x poodle = Whidbey Island Spaniel. 17-30 lbs. hypoallergenic. No shedding. Great with kids. Use a regular breeder. Try out someone else's dog from the same breeder. Check out the parent dogs. Good luck!

Just my thoughts. OP has a lap dog. I figure that is a 10 pounder? I'm not a fan of larger dogs, especially with kids. So my thoughts: poodle-cocker cross.
