Any suggestions? Just want a cheap one because I have never really owned a knife before. Thinking about the Ganzo G710. Seems to be pretty decently liked.

Thanks for any suggestions!

The Ganzo 710 is a very well made knife and would be a fine 1st knife. The Buck Odessys is also a very nice inexpensive knife.

Thanks for the reply! Would the Ganzo 710 be considered too large to carry? Seems a little big at 4.6", but I dont really know much about knives. I'll check out the Odessys right now!

Buck and Leatherman make great pocket knives... just picked up a Crater c33x for the EDC that I could forget I was carrying.

Depending on what you are doing, Opinel makes a beautiful knife that will handle lighter tasks but would not be suitable to too much wet work as the handle can swell and make opening and closing the knife problematic.

Opinel's carbon blades are excellent and you can pretty much shave with them out of the box, there are also stainless options and they make an outdoor knife with a synthetic handle, and stainless blade.

I cant recommend a knockoff of a benchmade as your first knife. whats your price range hopefully we can get you into something of higher reputation :)

Victorinox Swiss Army knives are top notch and would give you some additional functionality. Look into some of the ALOX models if the red plastic scales are a turn-off: Farmer, Pioneer, etc.

Kershaw Chill or Ton series are solid knives for $20 or under. For $35 or so you could upgrade to a Skyline.

spyderco has some amazing low cost knives specially the ambitious, persistence and tenacious. I got the persistence for about $30 and its truly great I edc it all the time. Even if something bad was to happen to the persistence its low cost makes replacement not much of a problem

Go see KershawGuy and snag a Kershaw blem from his inventory. That would be a great first knife that you could get a good bit of use out of and not break the bank.

Spend at least $40 and get a spyderco tenacious or a blem from Kershaw. With that budget you should be able to get something decent that will last you a long time.

Yeah a $40 budget is a great starting point for a great quality knife. When ever possible I try to deter people from going to knockoff knives specially ones that are exact copies like that ganzo, they take away from what proper companies are doing. Spending the extra coin on the real deal is totally worth it, you get the product guarantees, warranties and customer service to help maintain them. That is something you will never see from a knockoff company.

Try the Spyderco Tenacious, Persistence, or ambitious.
Or the "Byrd" line that Spyderco offers
If you want a knife that could withstand a nuclear Holocaust, try an Ontario RAT-1.

Oh yeah, here's a question I should've asked earlier: what's too big for a pocket knife? For example, I was originally thinking of getting the ganzo g710 that you guys told me not to get. It's like 4.6" folded. Isn't that kind of large?

I carry a ZT 0561 its 5" closed and I think that's as big of a folder as I would get. I do prefer the smaller ones but ZT is just so nice :)

4.6 inches closed isn't too big for me to carry, not at all, This is your first knife correct? So just some friendly advice, #1 check out your local knife laws I don't see your location so I don't know your laws but a lot of states have restrictions on blade length, so make sure your getting something legal to carry. #2 Your not used to carrying a knife so get something comfortable as you haft to get used to carrying them, If you get something to wide or heavy, It may end up as a paper weight because you feel it's too big , or it may take up too much of your pocket so you never carry it. Also what are you going to be using the knife for, There are thousands of options out there, hearing what you will be using the knife for will help in deciding what you need.

Good tips. We have really lenient knife laws. No blade lengths specified. I'll use it for just everyday stuff as well as (I suppose) self defense were I to need it. Truthfully it'll probably stay in my car. I'm not gonna lie; I know this is ridiculous but, I favor some knives just for the way they look. :(
