I'm looking to get my first Benchmade knife, becuase how much I've heard about how great knives they are. I want to get a knife that can stand up to everyday use, but possess the ability to serve as a self defense knife if I ever need it.

Everyone that gets a benchmade always ends up with atleast 1 griptilian its a great place to start

710 was my first and I love it. Grips are also highly praised. Awesome name by the way Wabbajack.

Most BM users start with a Griptilian and that is what I started with. However if you want to skip straight into big boy knives the 940 Osborne is amazing as well as the 810 Contego seems cool. I can't imagine you would have a problem with a self defense roll but you should not use that as a deciding factor.

I'm a big fan of the Barrage. You get a wicked fast spring-assisted deployment, a great blade, all in a lightweight package. It was my first benchmade and I recommend it to everyone.

Any Benchmade will stand up to everyday use. If you want the knife to also serve well in a self defense situation then you need a full handed grip and a blade with good reach. The 810 would be an excellent choice. A Griptillion (not a mini Griptillion) would also be a good choice.

None of the BM's I own would be my first choice for SD. ZT's fill that role :) my adamas is the most solid BM I own (710, 550, 551, 950 are the others). For everyday cutting and carrying I'd go with a bone collector 15020. Replaces the poopy grip handle with g10 and you get D2 steel with a knockoff spydie hole.

Any 940 variant will serve you well for years.. I started 13+ years ago with a 942 and I've been hooked since. If that's not your fancy, here's a size comparison of some other favorites: 810, 710-3, Ritter Grip, 940-1101.

Get the one that feels right in your hand!! They are all great knives!
