Thinking about grinding out my own ZT 0360. . .

Well I've ordered the ZT 0350 and plan on grinding the blade so that it is a 0360. This will be my first venture into doing anything of this kind other than adding jimping to a knife blade.

I guess I'm asking for any suggestions, tips or dos and don'ts. What do you think?

You could do a lot worse thing to mod it. I think the problem is that you then lose the DLC on the spine and it looks a bit funny. I suppose you could have someone duracoat the blade for you. I think the only thing you need to worry about in the grinding is making sure you don't heat the blade, ruin the heat treat, and weaken the blade. If you do end up doing this I hope you will share pictures of the process as well as the final result. I'd love to hear what you learned while modding your knife.

Yes, I took the coating into consideration when ordering my 0350. That is why I went with a stone washed finish. I will definitely update this post during and after the mod.

Could you then re-stonewash the blade to get a consistent coating? I think that'd be a worthwhile thing. I do like the sort-of clip point of the 0360, seems cool.

Did somebody say 360... hmmm!? There are a few exaples of what people have done to theirs in the 0360 pole thread and I think the show us your mod thread. I have only seen people do the dlc 0350 conversion and the 0300 into what I call a 0316. The stonewash would be the perfect answer to keep it uniform and something you would want people to see.

We are still currently waiting word from Jenn and or jimmer if he has any word on these. We supposedly got a order put in but have yet to get any kind of confirmation of if it was placed on the production schedule for sometime next year. A simple yes or no would suffice, as to not have people crying about release dates.

Back on topic, please do take pics along the way, as that sounds like the perfect method for a homebrew 0360! Good luck!

I reprofiled the spine of my Benchmade Onslaught, it takes a while to remove that much material without getting the blade hot. Take your time and it'll be fine!

I read somewhere that somebody removed the blade from the handle and soaked it in ice water and just kept dipping it every ten seconds or so as they cut then ground so it did not get too hot. Make sure to put tape on the edge so no accidents occur!

I only have experience "reprofiling" one Kershaw knife.

It didn't go well. But then I had only made maybe 5 fixed blades at that point.

If you decide to go for it (I think you should) I very much agree that you need to go slooow. Keep a template of what you are going for on hand too.

Have you done much of this before? You could always go buy a cheap knife (s&with or something) and practice.

Good luck!

Good advice. I will try modding one of my $10 shop knives and see how it goes.

What equipment do you have for grinding?

I was going to use my belt & disc combination grinder/sander. Then finishing off with some mini-files if needed and progressively with sandpaper. Then doing a stone wash finish and re-sharpening. Any suggestions or comments about what I should or shouldn't use or do?
