Thinking About Knives

It's been a while since I've posted. Partly because of recent issues with posting pictures, I think, and partly because life has been a bit busier and things.
Anyway, I've had my eye on the Klein 44034 for some time, and finally managed to acquire one a few months ago now. This particular knife seems to stand out a bit in my collection, as it is wider (not sure if that's the correct term) than most of my traditionals. The reason this knife caught my attention is because my Dad has had the same model for as long as I can remember, and still uses it during the week at work and whatever else. It used to be the only knife he'd carry, but a couple years ago, my sister and I got him a Case mini copperlock, and now that's his 'sunday knife'. :) Back to the Klein; I remember seeing it for years, sitting on his dresser when it wasn't in his pocket, and for some reason, I remember him using it to cut some Braunschweiger he was having as a snack one day when I was much younger. Not sure why that particular memory stuck with me. Perhaps it was the knife content, or the fact that he was using a pocket knife to cut his snack when he was right near the kitchen and other knives (although sharp knives in my parents' house were and still are somewhat hard to come by, since my Mom is a bit afraid of them, but that's another story), or perhaps it's because I thought the particular snack in question was incredibly unappealing. In any case, I've had the knife on my wishlist for some time, and now I own one.

The other two knives I've had for a while. I've recently showed some of my collection to my daughter, who has been allowed to hold them under direct supervision, but certainly not open at this point in time. She took an interest in these two, saying that the mini copperlock in amber bone looked like a map (she enjoys maps, treasuring hunting, things of that nature). The swayback, she says is a mermaid knife, which she says is because of the color - like the ocean. I thought the shape would've factored into her conclusion, but apparently not.

Hopefully this picture posts.

Nice knives; nice photograph. It's been years since I had braunshweiger (sp?); I am going to make some Cajun boudin blanc soon. I don't know what the Klein is whereof you spake.

Congrats on the pick up! Memories and nostalgia work in funny ways, don't they? I've said before that I feel the Klein lockbacks are incredibly underrated knives. Japanese-made with great fit & finish and decent steel. I think many would be impressed once they got one in hand.

My father also carried a Klein 44034 as well as the smallest version, the 44032. For the life of me, I can't find the 44032, but I have his 44034 that I still carry from time to time. It's very well built and is a tank of a knife. Far too large for my tastes, but I always remember my dad carrying it. The edge was so bad on it when I got it that I've joked before that it looked like he sharpened it with his teeth. I've sharpened all but one chip out of the blade and put a real nice edge on it. Just a fantastic knife, especially for the price.
