This would be my first folder
I'd like to make an auto or spring assisted but I don't really know where to start...I don't really want to go with a kit...I'd rather it be more of my own design
so I figure I'd ask you guys that have way more experience in making knives than I to maby share some helpfully hints and tricks what on designing something and maby somthing along the lines of the materials you like to use...ballbarings etc.
Thanks

I don't know if I'd recommend trying an auto or assisted for your first folder. Maybe a liner or frame lock. I'll be starting a WIP of a frame lock in a day or two, you could watch for that.

In the meantime, here's a good design tutorial for a liner lock knife. http://www.rayrogers.com/ftutorial.htm

Search this forum too, there have been some good ones here and there.

This book is what you want to design yourself.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0873418581/ref=olp_product_details?

It's been out of print for a while.
Amazon is now selling for $220 to $50,000,000

Yes , that's fifty million dollars for a book that was released for $16.95 and they still want the $4 for shipping.

I've got an extra copy I can let go for just $150,000 and I'll throw in free shipping.

There is a free scanned copy on-line, not as clear as the printed book, but way cheaper.
I'd still buy the book for $200, but you have to make that decision for yourself.

Thanks Salem I'm gunna have to keep an eye out for that wip..I recently took apart a crapy china no name folder and made new handles out of od green and black g10 and gave it to my cousen...that's what got me going on this...I don't have any experience with folders only with the other and I'm only a year into that lol
I think a liner lock is a good safe choice for me right now...just gotta draw up a plan I guess

1-10 I think that's alittle out of my price range...even the $200 is lol
Just looking to expand my knowledge alittle
Thanks guys
Dustin

I know you said you don't want a kit, but have a look at the button lock kits on knifekits.com

You can get a kit to see how it works, then they also sell the individual locks, springs and such for your build.

I think a buttonlock auto would be simpler than an assisted opener liner lock..

That's also a good idea....if needed I could just make a new blade or whatever to fit my ideas

bob T has a great book if you can find it
making of a tactical folder (or somethingk like that as i lent out my coppy and cant look )

The kits are also nice because you not only learn how they go together, but you can disassemble and create your own parts one at a time, until you have built your own.

I just bought 2 liner locks, a lock back and a slip joint from knifekits so I could learn and practice making them. I plan on making new blades and scales and eventually liners, so I can work my way up to it.

As a beginner who has only made a few folders, I will share how I learned. Buy a cheap knife on eBay and take it apart. While taking it apart, try to figure out why each part is where it is and how it works. Then, recreate all the parts of the knife. It's harder than you might think, even when you have a template to copy. When done, you should have two knives, the eBay knife and a copy that you built. From there, try making you own without using the template. It might take a couple tries. I did this with a spring assisted knife. It springs open fine, but I built a comb for it instead of a blade. Welcome back 1984!!!

Thanks everyone for the info...I think I'm just gunna play around with it and see what I get

It wouldn't be real without pictures, right? Blade is 6Al4V Titanium. Cut the teeth by hand on the band saw. These are the factory scales, but I remade the liners. The final knife is in that mystical state of near completion, just waiting for my muse to whack me on the head with a shovel then I will finish my scales.

Your knives know how to find the mystical state of near completion as well? Huh I thought that was only my knives.
