Thinking about moving out of the city...

Tonight my wife and I were discussing moving out of the city. We currently live in Pinellas county Florida which is a heavily populated area. Busy streets, loud city, crime, and everything else that goes with living in this type of area. When I was growing up my grandparents had property in Hiawassee GA. Not many people I have talked to have ever heard of it. Probably because it's a tiny town in north Georgia. I spent every summer with them there and most of my best childhood memories were made there in the outdoors fishing, hiking, and working in the outdoors with my grandfather. I was born and raised here in the city and to be honest I have never really felt like I belonged here, I'm just not a city person. My wife is beginning to feel the same way. She is much more accustomed to the city however, but with the birth of our twin girls especially, she is ready to find somewhere quieter. I think both of us feel like we would be happier in a quieter town, somewhere our girls can grow up playing outside. I am a realist however, I know there is no perfect place to live with absolute peacefulness, no crime, and where everyone is your friend. But I know there are places that are quieter, more peaceful, safer, and friendlier then where we live right now. Currently, the job I am in is not what I would call a career, so I am not tied to a specific job or field at this time. My wife works for Starbucks, so it would be nice to live somewhere that she could transfer to a store near where we would move. Our only real tie to our current city is that our parents live here and taking their granddaughters out of state would of course not be their preference, but I know they would support us in our decisions. I guess my quest is to find somewhere that we can find jobs, live in a quiet town where we can enjoy the outdoors (we love hiking, biking, camping, and being in the outdoors), but still close enough to some sort of city that it isn't a journey to go "grocery" shopping. So i guess my purpose in this long winded post (congrats and thank you if you're still reading) is to ask: Does anybody have any suggestions of this place that I'm searching for? We have been talking about somewhere in the southeast such as Georgia or North Carolina as those are areas that I am semi familiar with from visiting over the years. My other question is, I have never relocated before, does anybody have any suggestions (i.e finding a job, finding a house, etc.) I figured I could rely on the good people here for suggestions. From photos I have seen around here, some of you live in such amazing places. I would love to take a woods walk on a saturday afternoon, or go canoeing, or camping without having to drive 3 hours to an overpopulated park where people go to throw birthday partys in the 20 pavilions around the parking lot. Thanks for your help and sorry for my long life story, hopefully I didn't bore anyone too much :-)

Start with defining where you want to go.

Look at things like Redfin, CL, Zillow and whatnot to get an idea of what housing is going to run.

Then start looking at what job opportunities are available in that area.

It's gong to take $$$ to move, what are your assets? Any liabilities in your present situation?

Once you have some basics outlined, start working toward those while refining your options.

I wish you luck in your endeavor, hope you get what you want.

And, the ENTER key IS your friend.... :D

Thanks, you have given me a lot of good things to consider. I'll remember the enter key next time, I don't typically make such long winded posts :-)

You only live once!! Get you stuff in order- live as minimal as possible until you find work at the new location. I say just GO FOR IT!

Haha thanks. The one thing about both my wife and I are we are major planners. We don't do much without a plan in mind. Although I have to admit that sounds very appealing sometimes. Thanks!

Why leave Florida, just move to a less populated more rural area. Northwestern Florida is beautiful. Good luck

We are actually considering that too. I have a friend in Newberry and I do like it there, but I wouldn't mind some mountains either. Thanks for the input.

If I ever move to Florida- It's Dunedin, Fl. for me. I love that place! Clearwater keeps the vacationers away and it isn't super crowded.

Dunedin is nice. I guess I have always felt more at home in and around the mountains than I have the beaches and ocean.

I lived in Florida for a while. Just outside of Pensacola. I live in Southwest Tennessee now. Economic opportunities are always more plentiful in bigger cities of course (Memphis, Jackson and Nashville). But I like it here for most of the reasons you mention for moving. Hunting and fishing are normal accepted activities here. The general pace of life is slower. A thirty minute ride to the next county takes me to a decent canoing river with shuttle services and rentals if so inclined. Rents and property values are reasonable. There are plenty of forests and parks nearby. Grocery-getting is a five mile trip with closer stores if I just need a few items. Walmart is fifteen miles away to the West and twenty miles away to the South. More and bigger stores are available in Jackson, 40 miles to the West or in Nashville 75 miles East which also has world class hospitals and a major airport (I would NOT want to live there). Such places exist in most states. Good luck in your search.

Thats a great area. Been in Hiawassee hundreds of times. Can't think of a more beatifull place than North GA.
Not many jobs nearby there that I know of, but if you go a little SE of that near Dahlonega you can get to the North Atlanta area in about 30 minutes.
The ridge and valley region between Atlanta and Chattanooga is very nice as well.
