I'm giving serious thought to packing up and moving north. Specifically the Beaverton area of Or. The local PD is hiring and actively looking for Mil. Guys plus there seems to be plenty of opportunities for the GF to get a job.

Anyone familiar with the area? What's it like? How are the schools? What is the weather really like? I've heard all the horror stories of 300 days o rain a year etc, give me the real scoop please.

Or should I look somewhere else? Where?

And lastly, how are the gun laws? CCW issue, SBR, suppresors allowed or not?

I looked up the ccw laws and they beat the crap out of CA lol. Not as great as FL but fine for just carrying a handgun. you can get a WA non resident as well for traveling up that way. Seems very easy like here.

Do a search on my thread I started a few weeks ago there's a few good posts in it about OR in general. oh and Silencers BTW are federal law and controlled by BAFT.

I am familiar with Portland and surrounding areas. Politically Portland and Eugene vote Democrat while the rest of the state runs Republican. Beaverton is a town but can feel a bit like an ugly suburb neighbor of Portland. The upside is you are that much closer to the coast - putting you at about 50 minutes+/- to sand.

Oregon is suffering budget issues regarding the funding of public schools. You may find these are of a lesser magnitude than California. No sales tax but higher property taxes.

Re: the weather. We have seasons! Snow and ice one or twice a year. Temps above 100 several times a year. The rain does make you appreciate the sun though:thumbup:

A friend whose wife is job hunting is only finding offers from companies in Hillsboro which is adjacent to Beaverton.

hope this helps,
J.

It is a myth that it rains a lot in Portland. It only rains once per year. Of course, it starts in September and continues through June. But it's just one storm per year. July and August are often quite nice.

Well first things first from one vet to another thank you for your service. Now about the best state in the U.S. lol. It's illegal to pump your own gas, as mentioned before there is no sales tax, CHL is very easy to get, pretty good knife laws but wish it was like FL lol, yes it does rain a lot but not no 300 days a year that's just silly especially not in Portland. I live in Coos Bay which is right on the coast about 2 hours from the Cali border and it rains here a hell of a lot more than it does in Portland but it rarely ever snows and when it does it might stick for a day tops and thats like once every 10 or 15 years. It snows more in Portland though because their at a higher elevation than I am. The thing I love about living where I do is I can go 5 min and be at the beach, 5 min to the dunes to ride my quad, 10 minutes to the mountains to shoot my guns which have no silly 10 round mag laws and it never really gets below 30 degrees or above 100 where I live. I'm not a big fan of Portland theres just to much traffic and people for me but I do love Eugene and wouldn't mind moving back there again someday. The first thing you'll want to do is get rid of your Cali plate cause us true Oregonians don't take to kindly to the Californians overrunning this place LOL hahaha na it's not so bad now days but most of the old timers feel that way including my grandpa (R.I.P.) but really the issue they have is when a lot of them come up here and then bitch about how we do things and want to try and make it like the state they just left. That is what really makes people mad up here :). Hmm I'm sure I'm forgetting lots but don't want to ramble any more than i already have haha.

In Portland, it does snow every once-in-a-while. It's never pretty when it happens.

It's sure is funny to watch on the news though as Tri-Met buses are sliding out of control with a 1/4" of snow on the ground and people are abandoning their cars on the I-5.
