Thinking about moving to Texas

I know nothing about Texas other than texans like trucks. This is only the first day the idea popped into my head so it's not like it's urgent or anything.

I was thinking about the Corpus Christi area. Only because I work in a oil refinery now and my company has another refinery in CC and I would inquire about a transfer (if it's even possible).

The reasons I'm thinking about moving are:

- I'm sick of the damn cold/snow i.e. Chicago area
- It would be new and exciting to move out of state
- For the price that I paid for my 900 sq. ft. house I could have a new/newer house that is double in size
- Texans like trucks

How is the area in and around CC (crime)? What do I need to watch out for? How are the schools? Why do the few houses I looked at online not have basements (coastal soil?)? Will my home be devasted by every damn hurricane that rolls through there?

Corpus Christi is a very bad area!

I don't know about Corpus, but I can tell you about Southeast Texas in general. If you're sick of the snow, you've come to the right place, but be prepared for the sometimes extreme heat and usually extreme humidity. Houses in any part of Texas I've lived do not have basements at all, and I'm not sure why that is. Crime is a reality where I live, but I'm in Houston, and not the nicest part. In any case, I'm heavily armed and always aware of my surroundings, and I've never worried about it. Schools, I don't really have an opinion on, because to me, they are all the same, which is to say, they should be avoided if home-schooling is even a remote possibility. From what I understand, Texas has a pretty low cost of living compared to a lot of states (i.e. no state income tax), but I haven't really traveled much. And for the record, not all Texans like trucks (personally, I despise them, but I'm probably the exception). I hope this helps.

It get hot with extreme humidity up here too, it sucks but Canada isn't a option:D.

You guys aren't the first people to tell me about the bad crime in CC. I was thinking more like 30-40 minutes outside of CC, if that changes anything at all?

Where is there nice affordable housing in Texas where there are oil refineries nearby?

Says the guy from Jersey. :p

OP: Corpus is a decent area to stay. A few miles north of the refinieries would be best. As far as basements, Texas sits on some pretty big aquifers. A basement would be flooded about 6 months out of the year. Also, housing around the oil areas is a little higher because oil workers allegedly make really good cash. Our cost of living is lower than IL IIRC, so housing would be a little more affordable.

That's a major reason I want to move. I was looking online and I couldn't believe what $160,000 would get you down there:). Houses like the ones I was looking at would be$250-350,000 up here:eek:.

I'm actually in C.C. now (lived in San Antonio for about 30yrs then came here about 6 months ago to help my folks out).

The cost of living, as you've noticed, is pretty low here (for the most part). It kind of feels like a big beach town and, like anyplace else, it has it's good areas and it's bad ones. I don't have kids but, from what I hear, private schools are your best bet if you can swing it.

PM or e-mail me if you have any specific questions and I'll see if I can get them answered for ya.

If you live anywhere on or near the coast in Texas, you WILL get hit by hurricanes and tropical storms. Just bend over and take it like you're in prison. If ya don't like that idea, move to Dallas or Austin. Pasadena is nothing but refineries (the air is greener in Pasadener!) if that's what you want. Texas has CC but if you stay out of the bad parts of town you should be ok.

Just to clarify a bit, Texas allows you to carry a concealed handgun in your vehicle, without a permission slip, and also allows concealed carry of single-edged folders or fixed blades up to 5 and a half inches in blade length, without restriction or registration. Also, you get the added benefit of lots of permit holders around you, carrying guns for the defense of themselves and those who choose not to get such permits. I've thought a lot about moving to states where I can open carry and such, but I've decided to stay in the Lone Star State and do what I can to expand our freedoms here. After all, this is the only state to carry the honor of once being it's own country. And who knows, it may be necessary to do so again.

As was Beaver Island in Michigan's northern Lake Michigan region. It was a Mormon refuge and kingdom for a short time in the the 19th century.
