Let's say that a Randall Model 1 is absolutely out of the question...

What do you guys and gals out there think about the Cold Steel version. Granted, it might be unfair to compare it to the Randall knife, but how does it stand on it's own merits?

Does anyone have one, or experience with one and would be able to share?

had one awhile back and is one nice made knife, don't think you'll go wrong if you pick one up

I have one. It's very nice knife but the edge is a little thick for my taste. It will make for a great combat knife however since it's stoutness should hold up to the type of use(or abuse) a combat type blade will likely encounter. It is extremely sharp and holds it's edge pretty good for AUS-8A.
The linen Micarta handle was a little slick for me so I filed in a few shallow finger grooves and that improved the grip 100% for me. It was alright by itself, but I have this deep seated need to change and tweek things till they are suited to my liking. I've fought off the urge to thin out the edge for the last 4 years because that would change the nature of this piece and it's originally intended use.
The sheath is approx. 7 oz. oiled leather and the front pocket provided is perfectly sized for a small folder like a Kershaw Chive or a small diamond hone like E-Z Lap or a small multi-tool. I carry an E-Z Lap diamond stone in my pouch.

The one real gripe I have about the CS R-1 is that it doesn't have a lanyard hole. This is one thing that, IMO, is a must have feature on a combat type knife.

The R-1 Military Classic is not a Randall but it's not crap either. It's not stellar(like a Randall) but it is very serviceable. I still feel good about buying one years after the fact.

Hope this helps.

All the best,
Mike U.

Never held one myself. However James Keating prefers the Randall #1 and recommends the Cold Steel to someone who can't or won't spend that much on the Randall. He has an interview whenre he mentions it on www.realfighting.com
