What are your thoughts on the ZT 550. Is it worth it or are the any better competitive options?

I like mine so well that I bought an extra one just in case I loose it. I prefer the old style clip.

The 0550 is a big, heavy, thick blade, knife, if that's what you're after then it's a great choice. Others to look at would be a Benchmade 810 Contego, 950? Rift, Adamas, etc. Spyderco Para 2 is about the same blade length but much lighter and more compact. Strider SGN is kind of the best of both worlds being a thicker blade than the 0550 and lighter/more compact... ...more money though.

The short answer is that you can't go too far wrong with an 0550.

You'll like it a lot if you lean towards beefy manual folders. The handle works for large hands too.

loving mine now: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/949839-zt-0550-zzzzzzzzzzzz-*snore*-got-bored-of-it

The ZT 0550 is indeed a very beefy folder. If that is a thing you like in your knives then it is the knife for you. I have heard a few people not liking the G10 scales that come with it as it is not aesthetically pleasing but I must say I felt the same way with mine. However I have gotten over it and now I am loving the knife. Smooth action, great steel, ergonomic (at least in my hands) a overall solid knife that is built to last. I am sure you would enjoy it.

I've had a 550 and a 551 and sold them both. They were excellent but too heavy for my brand of EDC.
I would suggest the Spyderco Brad Southard. Great knife, excellent blade-steel, flipper...all good and smooth.

If you are going to buy one look into purchasing from kershaw Guy he has amazing prices you can't beat he also sales blemishes and new

Have two(2) heavy folders - Buck CSAR-T and ZT 550..can't imagine ever breaking either.

ZT 550 has a slight edge-a Hinderer design and S35VN while the CSAR-T is 154CM w/Paul Bos heat treatment.

I am not a real knife guy but am coming to appreciate some of the finer blades and varieties in my price range and buying a few..cheaper hobby than firearms..so far.

Handled the 0550 ad the 0560, my opinion is that the 0560 is worth the extra $ but you cant go wrong with either. both were very well made
