That always gets me in trouble! ;) The great thread on the HEST has me thinking, what do you guys think would make a good "urban knife?" Let`s see or hear some ideas, and just possibly come up with a good design.

I think that the EWOK you made with the extended tang would be a pretty good urban utility knife for me. Don't know what stock you used, but I would want 1/8. Maybe just a cord wrapped handle instead of actual scales, and a kydex sheath with an IWB loop of some sort.

For a little bit more of a SHTF urban scenario I think that the Michigan Trail Knife in the same configuration (extended tang, cord wrapped) AKA "The Detroit Shank" would be an excellent choice.

I would think around a 4" blade
Def kydex sheath
Glass break point on end of knife
paracord wrap handle.
thumb serrations
U.S.A. stamped on opposite side for "Urban Survival Advantage" Knife ;)

First things that popped into my head John.

I think your Anniversary EDC with extended tang for prying and pocket on the sheath to hold a multitool or swisschamp would fit the bill fine.

Well..I am sort of working out my own design for this subject based on my own personal experiences. I intend for it to be the first knife I make on my own, well...actually with a good bit of help and input from Ryan on heat treats and tempering and such and mental notes from many conversations with Rick and Bryan over the last couple of years, but you know what I mean. My thoughts on the subject are that in urban environments or urban survival situations call for a small-ish tool, but one with a good full grip for those slippery times, that can be carried in multiple ways, tucked away on the body with minimal clothing that is stout enough to do some of the work of a larger knife, and that has more than one capability. It needs to be able to do the normal whittling and cutting of organic materials but also needs to be able to deal with all the synthetic materials available for use in an urbanized area where man discards a lot of things that can well be put to use, i.e. plastics, fiberglass, nylon, whatever....occasionally maybe even holes in sheet metal, it needs to be able to handle things like cutting tin cans and aluminum without wrecking the edge and still be not too hard to sharpen with portable sharpening stones. The ability to cut and strip wires would be a good thing too.

Urban Knife?
A WWI style trench knife with attached knuckles and a dagger blade about 5" long, 1" wide and 1/8" thick. With a 1" pointy tang.

Thats what ya need if you wanna walk around in atlanta. Of course Id only use it once youve exhausted all your combat rifle ammo. :p

I think a few modifications or added features to your Tactical Hunter would be just the ticket. This on has been thinned quite a bit but started out a full 3/16 knife that is nothing short of a battle tank. This one is also Almost a ful convex now. Remodel the tang a bit for some of the things like a glass breaker. I don't know if adding a can opener would be feasible but hey, grab a p-38 for you pack. This convex would be easy to keep sharp. Make it with or without scales. Survival Sheath option with just a pocket/pack sheath This one is about a four inch blade.

This one was thinned because I couldn't find a German tank that needed to be pryed open.

I'd have to say an EWOK blade with a full handle. I don't know of many places that would restrict carrying that short a blade and it is stout enough to do most tasks well.
I absolutely love mine.

I still never picked one of those up. But I probably have one that is awful close.:D

I think there are many good ideas here. I would like to see something about the size of the EWOK. I think a full or better yet an extended tang for prying or glass breaking. I was thinking instead of paracord very thin micarta handles. A full convex grind with a minimal sheath of kydex or leather.

Something that is large enough to be of use but small enough to carry with minimal discomfort.

I dunno. I like the one I thought of for that police knife thread from a while back. I'll be getting John to make one for me one of these days.

Nice and thin and easy to carry wherever.

Why don't we analyze the tasks that are required for urban survival and base the design on completing those tasks?

That is nice and thin. I would take one of these.:) I need to ask John to build something like this for me in February or March.

Hi Stanley -

I like that idea -

I need to open boxes and cut tape and twine/rope/cord/plastic ties/wire, and I definitely need to open beers, a way to break glass would be good although that would be a rare use, and it would be good to be able to pry with the tool.

I personally don't like the cord-wrapped knives as much as a regular handled knife.

I have never thought about a fixed blade for EDC, but I am willing to give it a shot.

For me, in an office environment (doesn't get much more urban than that) I would need a sheath that fits down in a pant pocket - I can wear jeans now on most days, so jeans are what I would be thinking of when I designed the sheath. I would like the knife to be small enough to fully fit in my right front pocket, yet it should still have a decent sized blade (that is why I always carry a folder now) of around 2".

I think the toughest part will be the sheath and making it ride low enough in my pocket so that I don't scare the people in my office.

Those are my thoughts on the usKedc (urban survival Knife edc).

best regards -

As mentioned above I think your EWOK, with minor mods, would do the job just fine. Add 1/2" to the blade length and a squared off extended tang...offer it in black G10 with red liners (paracord gets nasty with use)...1/8 or 5/32 thick...kydex with tek-lok for most versatile carry options...DONE!

I think that depends on how you define "urban". Do you define it as a knife you can use in an office environment? In that case, I think that your Neckmuk with super-thin scales or Wildewinds's design would be perfect. Do you define it as a knife you can use in an urban combat zone? In that case, I would prefer my design from the LEO knife design thread, since I designed it with that sort of environment in mind. Do you define it as a post-apocalyptic city? Then, I would say it would have to have even more of a combat element to it. It will be interesting to see where this goes--you'll be a Tacti-cool maker in no time, John! :P

I`m thinking 6 1/2" - 7" overall, thin slabs, and a small extension on the tang.
