Today I painted some window trim in my kitchen and found myself planning a PSK out of the one quart metal paint can! I thought heyyy, if a guy could wash all the old paint out of this it could fit a lot of gear and it would be waterproof, you could cook in it and it would be waterproof!
I'm starting think all wierd like, how much paracord can I wind in a skoal can so I can pay it out tape measure style? or do I need pants/shirts with more pockets? Is my current pack big enough?

What the hell did you guys do to me!!!!!:D:p -Matt-

That's part of the mind disease this forum brings us, lol. Just drink the Kool-Aid, everything will be fine :D

Seriously though, it's the out of the box thinking that so many clever folks in this forum do, and I have seen some great ideas and have learned a lot.

I'd give you an in-depth explanation but you just reminded me. I need a new pack so I'm off to Sportsman's Warehouse to see what they have...

That's awesome! I have been eyeballing some bulk 35mm film canisters, but wasn't sure what to do with them yet. Now I know where to put my 400+' of paracord.
On the pack issue, I have moved out of a Lowe-Alpine and Kifaru into smaller less expensive packs, but I have to get a small REI to use for my walks to work. This triggered my lust for another Kifaru, which means I need to build another PSK and test it out, on and on. It's an illness I tell ya. But better than some others.

Thats not a half bad idea actually! I just checked the pantry but my coffee ''tin'' is actually made out of plastic =(

Perhaps I can find one at a buddys house or a different brand at the grocery store.

That's when you know you've got it bad. You choose your coffee on the basis of the can you get from it, not the aroma of the brew you'll be drinking. :p

Folger's plastic cans are great for water collection and purification gear (at least in my household emergency and car camping kits). They are also great for all the misc. hardware I salvage from my construction projects as well.

How bout it Grease-man! the things this forum has made us do

I am so grateful and glad I ever came here.

We may never need our b.o.b.s and p.s.k.s and all our steel and tools (I can only hope);
but if we do, I will be so glad I tried to be as ready as I could when I needed it. besides I've got great camping/hiking gear now and if
the power goes out or I break down, I've got something more than an owners manual to help out. good luck in your preparedness ;)

Go to the paint department at Home Depot for clean, unused quart and gallon paint cans. They stock them for custom blends, etc.

I'm glad to be a part of this forum as well! I'm taking my time getting things together right now. Still have lots of learning to do so I can make purchases based upon my needs and make the dollars count. I know where to ask if I have any questions! :D

Hey thanks for the tip! It'll save me some paint cleaning and make the whole thing "betterer"!;) I figured the gallon cans would make good vehicle kit containers as well. -Matt-

I'm amazed at what you guys think of sometimes! Really good stuff!

Is that sweetened or unsweetened Kool-Aid?:D -Matt-

Just this evening I was mink-oiling my boots. I did the same thing with the almost empty mink oil can...the advantages of a round can, it seems a little more rugged than Altoids tin. Hey! Maybe I could form the bottom into a parabola for fire-starting, what other use could there be for that little attached opener thing? The inside of lid would make a good mirror... My family is used to me staring at everyday objects such as, well, cans. You'll be fine Grease-man. Don't fight it :)

Just breath and go with it. Soon people will stop asking why and just hand you their empty tins with that strange smile on their face. ;)

enaray, in the boot, shoe trade,it is generally accepted that mink oil is not a good thing foryour boots. it tends to prematurely soften leather needlessly.

Thanks for the advice. The stuff I'm using is labeled mink oil (Kiwi) but ingredients are actually silicone and lanolin. I guess it would apply just the same though. I mainly use it to help with waterproofing, but maybe not the best thing for the leather. Old habits...:)
