How's it going folks?

I have been contemplating picking up a Chefyougo and Sanyougo for the Misses and I would like to get your first hand experiences.

Where do they excel?
Where do they fall short?
Do you still use both?
Do you prefer one to the other?
What do you use them for?

Would you suggest I skip one and only get the other?
If so, which?

Now for the Misses, she is tiny (4'8" and about 110lbs), so the handles will be passable for her.
Uses:
Likely paring, small food prep, taking camping and to friends houses for kids parties and helping prep.

This was moved to GKD from the Boker sub. Since I let it sit there for a few days, it dropped back in the thread queue.

Does anyone in General have anything to say about either of these knives?

I don't have experience with either knife. If you are solely interested in comments from owners, then please ignore my comment.

From looking at pics of them on the Internet, especially pics of them in someone's hand, I would much rather buy some kitchen knives that come with plastic blade guards, or add some blade guards or sayas, if what I was looking for was portable chef's knives. Or heck, even some real kitchen knives and a knife roll.

This is the time of year when you can find stupidly good "doorbuster" deals on kitchen knives, especially shorter chef's knives like 6" and thereabouts. Shop around the various online retailers that sell kitchen knives.

If you really like the short and stubby blade, then perhaps the Zwilling Pro 4 1/2" Petite Chef Knife or the Zwilling Pro 7" Chef Knife which seem to be some of the loss leaders this week on one site I looked at. Next week it will be something else.

Or you could go with a KAI Luna 7" Santoku Knife which comes with a blade guard and can be found for $10, with the same steel (though not to the same hardness) as the Zwilling.

Thanks, I will be looking to see what is out there.

I got the chefyougo and it is kind of fun. :) I do believe, however, that it is aimed at the Euro market. Carrying a sheath chef knife is not something typically American; we do not tend to go to gatherings where many pitch in to prepare foods (except pot lucks and, maybe, BBQs). It is interesting but not one I use much. :( The Sanyougo I see no use for.

I have a sanyougo that sees some service. Mostly prepping lunches and stuff. Its a decent size, not super heavy, and the blade is a decent shape to get a variety of grips on. Its too heavy to really be added to my hiking kit, but its nice and compact, so it is part of my car camping/picnic kit. If I knew I was going to a friend's place and was going to do some food prep, I'd take it with. It does well on chopping veggies, and the height of the blade allows for scooping up chopped stuff.

My other two field cooking knives are a vic warncliff paring knife and a scanpan santuko. The Boker gets the most use. The sheath is alright, nothing flash, but does mean you have to clean the blade (boo hoo right?)

Hmm, thanks folks.

I will be doing a little more reading and trying to get a peek at where the Misses fingers land on her knives, so I can get some (more) accurate measurements.

If anyone else has some input, please chime in.

Th ChefYouGo is much more useful and more ergonomic than the SanYouGo (3-finger vs 2-finger grip)

Did you get the Chefyougo? I just ordered one from amazon prime and i'm psyched. It may not be the most "practical kitchen knife" but it looks kick ass. Tell me what you think about it please!

Since this popped up again, I'll add that I have the SanYouGo. I like it. It's fun and interesting, and find myself taking it to just about every family food gathering. If I were a chef, I may find it hoakie...But I'm not. I always get so frustrated with my extended family, as their knives are abused, and simply can barely even be called cutting implements. So now if I end up getting put in the kitchen to help, I have my own blade. Each time it's used, I'll tune and/or strop it so it's a laser for next call of duty. :D When I used to just use my folder of the day, I would be looked at funny with comments about germs (even though it would be well scrubbed). No one had concerns with the little fixed blade.

Now I just need to find the ChefYouGo for a good price.

Thanks for the input man! Mine comes on Sunday. I can't wait to use it.

Actually, I didn't. The Misses said that she was happy with her Shuns, and I managed to track down a knife that I have been stalking since early 2016.

As far as Kitchen knives go, I think my next purchase will be an old MAC with a 4.5"-5.5" blade and heavily offset handle. I am already planning on tweaking the spine for a more pointed tip.

Maybe one day I will grab one of the Chefyougo/Sanyougo, but they are off of the radar for now.

No, the knife I have been chasing was a JH Lloyd Sowbelly in Westinghouse Micarta.

I don't know exactly what it is about the knife, but when I saw it, I immediately knew I had to have it. Unfortunately, it was withdrawn, and then sold privately. Once I found this out, I messaged the buyer, and I remained one (or more) steps behind. Always being sold prior to my locating or making contact with the new owner.

I finally tracked it down through a member here that sold it via Facebook to a guy in the UK, who still happenedt own it. Upon hearing my story and learning that I tracked this knife through a total of 12-13 owners, he was willing to sell it to me for what it cost him.

It is now currently in shipment from the UK to its final destination, and it will be a user much as it already is.

That is seriously good looking man. Way to stay committed lol. I tried to track down a Spartan Pallas Black tanto recently with no success.

I clicked post reply when I was correcting a word, then finished the post as you replied. Please see above and Thank You.

I will try to find one for you, if you are still interested.

Now that is a seriously cool story Bro. Unfortunately I don't know anything about knives. But I have a buddy that knows absolutely everything about knives. Would you mind hanging out for a few minutes while I get him down here?

Sorry about that. It's amazing what the first few words of a sentence can trigger in the mind. I guess you need to have watched more than a few episodes of Pawn Stars.

But seriously, you should document both the story and the provenance. Could even be done on a small card size, and laminate it. Everything is more official and important when laminated. :D
