Thinking of adding a thumbstud to a Boker Tree 2000

I've never modified a knife and don't really know what's involved, or if this can be done. I have a Boker 2000 (440C steel, I believe) with a very light pull (maybe a 2 or 3). I wouldn't be able to open it with a wrist flick, but the way the 2000 dips in the front leaves plenty of room for a thumbstud and it would make a nice one-handed opener.

So what's involved? I spoke with one maker and he was talking about ruining the temper and having to take the knife apart and softening it, etc. which is obviously out of the question, just financially speaking. I spoke to someone else and they though a carbide drill would do the trick. Just a tiny hole, and then I guess I can try to locate a thumbstud and screw set. I have a friend who's a machinist and has access to tools that can do this, but he's never worked on a knife before.

SO, if it's possible and not a stupid idea that will ruin a perfectly good knife as is, if I mark a dot on my knife and say "Drill here" and find a thumbstud set somewhere (a knife maker I've bought from before (Smitty's Designs) said he had some I could use), will this end happily like a Disney flick or tragically like an opera?

There are some websites online where you can get thumbstuds with screws. I'm not sure if they are sponsored here to I won't mention a name but just do a google search and you will find it. As for the drilling, yes it is possible and no you don't have to ruin the blade temper. I bought a Bosch 1/8 inch carbide masonry bit at lowes. That will drill through the hardened steel. Mount in a drill press and take your time. A diamond tipped dremel bit is also helpful to make a divot to start with. The carbide bit will try to skate around otherwise. You can use some WD-40 to keep everything cool. Also, I wrap the whole knife I Teflon tape to keep it from getting scratched up. And a peice of steel behind the blade will help when the bit punches through.

This is my custom shop 110 in s30v. I've done all my 110s this way and it's made life way easier with one handed opening. :)
