I've never modified a knife and don't really know what's involved, or if this can be done. I have a Boker 2000 (440C steel, I believe) with a very light pull (maybe a 2 or 3). I wouldn't be able to open it with a wrist flick, but the way the 2000 dips in the front leaves plenty of room for a thumbstud and it would make a nice one-handed opener.
So what's involved? I spoke with one maker and he was talking about ruining the temper and having to take the knife apart and softening it, etc. which is obviously out of the question, just financially speaking. I spoke to someone else and they though a carbide drill would do the trick. Just a tiny hole, and then I guess I can try to locate a thumbstud and screw set. I have a friend who's a machinist and has access to tools that can do this, but he's never worked on a knife before.
SO, if it's possible and not a stupid idea that will ruin a perfectly good knife as is, if I mark a dot on my knife and say "Drill here" and find a thumbstud set somewhere (a knife maker I've bought from before (Smitty's Designs) said he had some I could use), will this end happily like a Disney flick or tragically like an opera?
