Thinking of dying the G10 on my Benchmade 162

The scales are a strange blue green color that I am not a fan of. I am thinking about just dying them black with Rit dye like I have read about. However, the scales are glued onto the blade. Would I be at risk of damaging the heat treat by dying them in boiling dye while still attached to the knife? I would probably just put the handle into the dye and not the whole knife.

Boiling water will not hurt your heat treat, it is not hot enough. I have used boiling liquids in the past to force a patina on my blades with no issue.

Its boiling away right now - dark brown is what they had so thats what I am using. Will post pics.

Interested how this turns out. I have 6 162's. Don't mind the green G-10 though . Kind of grew on me.

Well I couldnt get the brown to stick. However, I turned the teal green into more of a gray.

After an hour of boiling dye - the izula handles went in for only 20 seconds or so. The linen micarta soaked it right up.

The underlying color will affect what color you end up with. Brown over green will not end up brown. I used some Cherry Red dye on my grey/black Rift scales and ended up with maroon and black. Kelly Green (bright true green) over the grey/black Rift scales ended up being dark hunter green.

That being said, your knife looks great!

Looks pretty good . I may have to try that. I might just try straight black.
