Is rough rider a good brand? does anyone own the rough rider 5 blade sowbelly, and is it any good? any pics to help me decide would be greatly appreciated.

There is a long thread on here all about Rough Riders. That should give you much information about them. I don't own the five bladed sowbelly but I do have a few Rough Riders. They all have ok fit and finish, good backsprings, come very sharp and the three bladed ones don't rub. All of them are used, but none have any hard use. I did break the tip off of the clip blade of a trapper while scraping something. It was easy to fix. Whether these knives would stand up to daily whittling without falling apart, I'm not sure. The only sowbelly I have is a single bladed lockback which to me, is unusual. Nice red bone, locks up perfect with no blade play and came very sharp. For the low amount Rough Riders cost I think you could try any pattern to see if you like it and not go wrong. I don't know how practical a five bladed sowbelly would be but I'd get one and try it out.

Agreed. As cheap as they are it's hardly worth debating. Try it and if you don't like it you aren't out that much.

I have a 3-blade sowbelly, along with several other RR patterns. It's a good knife for the money. I bought it out of curiosity and would probably carry it if I didn't have so many other "favorites" to choose from.

Go for it. Honestly, rough rider produce the sharpest out of the box edge that I have ever come across, this side of custom.

Great knives, period. My first RR was a small sowbelly stockman, used it for years and it's still good to go. Have tried most patterns but not a 5 blade. It'll be good though.

Regards

Robin
