....out to SoCal. San Diego to be specific. I have a buddy working in Seattle that is going to be transferred to the san diego area. My girlfriend, who I was seeing for 3+ years, and lived with for two, and I recently broke up. Beside needing a change of scenery, the winters here in MA are killing me. I should be beaten for ever leaving florida :grumpy:

anyhow, anyone have any information they can give about the area, cost and standard of living, employment prospects etc? I work in the commercial fishing industry but have worked on charter and party boats deep sea fishing, I hold a USCG Captain's licens and a merchant mariner card (z-card ordinary seaman). I have a limited knowlege of the fishery of the region so anyone who fishes for sport or work there, input is welcome.

mostly though, I'd just like to know a little about the area. there are a few other places I'm thinking of, but for the most part this is the most promising, as I'll have someone I know in the area about the same time I plan on moving.

thanks

pete

Others will chime in. I lived in LA for four years in the mid-70s and have visited San Diego for professional reasons countless times over the decades.

A beautiful place. In recent years, real estate values have literally soared. I'd imagine that has moderated recently, as it has throughout the US.

A beautiful place to live, with all the amenities. The local economy has been good for many years -- can't imagine you'd have trouble finding a job.

Of course, it is still California. Odd attitudes, crazy laws, political correctness -- all of that is as true in San Diego as it is in San Francisco. You'll find it very useful to pick up some Spanish!:o

I wouldn't move there. But...I'm a cranky old conservative scientist who already put in two decades as a Californian (my first two) -- so I've had my time. It would definitely be different for you.

So -- don't fear! You'll do just fine.
