Hey folks,

About two weeks ago I purchased a carbon fiber 940. I heard so much about it and just had to get my hands on one. When I first handled it at the shop my immediate reaction was that it was small and light. Dare I say dainty? But I thought that maybe I'd get used to it because I'm so used to carrying larger/heavier knives like the BM 710, Spyderco Military, etc. After about two weeks I'm still not used to it. It just doesn't feel right. Anyone else have similar thoughts/feelings? I really want this knife to work for me but so far I'm not feeling it.

If you're not feeling it, there's probably not much anyone can say that will change that. Whenever that has happened to me...and it has, I've learned to follow my gut, take the hit and move on. That same 940 you can't get yourself to like might just be someone else's sweet spot. I was smack in the middle of assembling a collection of assorted daily-use folders when I held a Buck 112 for the first time. I knew immediately that it was the folder for me. Off and away went the others and I began focusing solely on building the collection using only 112's. For another person, the 112 may not trip his or her trigger. I say keep looking. You'll find the perfect knife that suits you best. Good luck.

Yes I had a 943 felt same was sold it. Dainty is perfect description of my feelings. I was used to carrying a 615. I got a SG spider monkeylike it better, still smallish but better solid feel.

Carried mine today for the first time in a long time. I got a 940-1 and also a 943 for a screaming deal so I've hung on to them despite not being fully enamored. They are great knives that regularly make "top EDC" lists and I'm willing to bet that one day I wake up and it's "the one" . They are not going down in value so I say keep it around of you can afford it.

That said, I sold my spider monkey eventually. I was never gonna love that knife.

You should probably just sell it to me.:) Honestly though if it doesn't suit you then pass it along and buy something that does. Just because a lot of people like it doesn't mean that you will. I am that way with a lot of knives. The mini grip for instance that I have for sale now is one of those knives. But I do like the 940. Shoot me an email if you decide to move it along.

I wonder if you had a heavier 940 if you would like it better. I have never held the 940-1 but I know it is lighter compared to the others. Maybe you can get your hands on a regular 940 or a 940-2 to see if you like them better.

940-2 will basically be the same weight. It comes in at .1 ounces heavier on my scale. 2.4 vs 2.5. No noticeable difference. The aluminum handle is a different story. It weighs 2.9 oz. A whole half ounce heavier. That difference can be felt. The aluminum handle does feel a little more substantial in my opinion as well. That would be a good option to try. I'm sure you would have no problem trading for an aluminum one. I have one I would trade today for a 940-1. Just let me know.

I tend to like the bigger and heavier knives too, but I also carry a BM 940-1 in my shirt pocket with a deep carry pocket clip. I understand that light weight can feel cheap. Many years ago, when I looked at a titanium watch, it felt like cheap plastic. I carried a magnesium laptop computer that also felt like cheap plastic to me. It both cases, the items were very light and strong. I have not tested the strength of the BM 940-1 carbon fiber, but I expect it would be stronger than the light weight would indicate.

I love the concept of the 940. I've owned 2 different variants. But in the hand it didn't feel perfect enough to justify the price, especially with the wedge-ground blade. So I sold. I've never kept a knife that I felt about the way you're describing.

Sounds like OP may be past the point of no return, but I got a used 940-1501 in nice condition off the exchange last year and for quite a while initially my reaction was "meh." I mean, I could appreciate all of its on-paper attributes but it didn't really live up to my probably overhyped expectations. Felt that way for the first month or so at least, but I'd gotten it for a good price so felt no urgency to move it on.

Fast forward to the present and it gets carried far more than any other knife I own--just amazing overall utility in such an unobtrusive form factor. Not the sexiest knife or anything but I can't imagine ever getting rid of mine now.

940/941 weight information: 3 versions 1)plastic handle 72gm, 2) Aluminum handle 82gm, and 3) Titanium handle 92gm. I wish Benchmade would make an S90V clip point blade.

Wish they made a clip point s90v as well.

I just picked up a used one for 45 bucks on Craigslist.
Beat up scales with a combo edge.

Why? Besides it being a steal. I missed having one again.

Yes it feels small in grip. But I like the way it disappears in my pocket.

Ultimately, if you don't like it. Others will.
Will you regret getting rid of it? Possibly.

I'm actually starting to come around to liking this knife. I carried it the last week or so when traveling for work wearing khakis and a sport coat. Its light weight actually was good for the clothing I was wearing. While it might not be my go-to EDC it definitely has worked well in business settings. And I anticipate it'll carry well in the warm weather when wearing shorts. I think it's a keeper.

I've found it strikes a fantastic balance between versatility, capability, and portability. And the 940-1 variant only sweetens the pot. It's understandable how it might feel a little dainty at first if you're used to carrying bigger and heavier knives, but I'm glad you're starting to like it.

Just got a 940-1501 today and to me it seems like a 21st century version of the traditional pocket knife. About the same size as most, certainly light enough for parking with the clip or in a pocket the old fashioned way, seems robust tuff for edc, and my unit is perfect by my eyes and hands; did I share that it is way way crazy sharp from the factory via Roger's BMknives with perfect bevels. The pocket clip will stay on for better ergonomics, to help my XL paw get around it. Maybe a trip to the G10 doctor for thumb ramps and gripper treatment... With all the long term positive reviews by so many others, I'm thinking I'll keep it around to see if my hand can use it as effectively as an old school pocket knife.

That was exactly the way it slowly won me over, too. I wear suits or sportcoat/slacks most days, and it's almost an overbuilt knife for that sort of duty. It's like the first design imperative was pocket presence, and then they maximized everything else they could with this design without compromising that. And it resulted in a knife that doesn't have the same all-around capability as some, but as good as or better than any other that pretty much disappears in the pocket of any clothing choice. Not the knife I go into the woods or do significant work with, but for everyday use it's very tough to beat.

Glad you're starting to like it!

I had a 940, 940-1, and 940-2. The -1 never really grabbed me and I just sold it. It wasn't a bad knife but the -2 and aluminum version just felt more substantial to me. I'd recommend trying one of those. The carbon fiber version actually felt too light (dainty). With that said, I do plan on replacing the -1 with a -1601 Cabela's exclusive but purely for collecting purposes. If not for that I might have kept the -1.
