Thinking of tricking out my thumb-stud...

I've been thinking of doing a little work on my Sebbie's thumb stud. Was thinking I'd take the stud out and add my own Emmerson-style remote opening device, and I'm wondering what smarter knife-owners than I would have to say on the matter. (I imagine it probably voids the warranty, but what the hell.) As far as I'm concerned, this would be a wonderful addition to the Sebenza's design, even if it does compromise the knife's no-frills demeanor. However, I lack practical experience regarding knife alteration, and I was wondering if anyone could give me feedback.

The drawing is a crude one, but shows roughly what I want to attempt. I figure I'll need two thin plates to go along the side of the blade, holding a third piece of machined metal (the remote opener itself) in place along the spine. This three-part assembly will be installed via the thumb-stud hole, and presumably I'll stick some kind of bump over the bottom of the side plates, (maybe just a big screwhead) so I'll still have a working thumb-stud. Maybe I'll weld the three pieces together once I have them fitted so I can have a simple one-peice modification.

Anyone think I'm crazy or stupid? I could use some input on the matter before I proceed.

I think it's an excellent idea. In fact I had the similar idea for a couple of years now, a spyderco thumb hole. I even got permission from SPyderco to use it.

I never found someone willing to make it. FUll speed ahead I say.

i couldn't pull it off myself, but would sure love to see it done...

Great idea...although you may not need the middle piece, just the two "plates" on the side shaped as you've drawn it.

However, I would suggest getting a piece of steel (who cares what kind, but stainless would be nice) and making the who thing one piece and then attach to just one side. this would shrink the overall width of the mod (which may or may not fit in between the handles) and would simplify setup...and if you mastered it, maybe you could sell a couple to folks around here. good luck! show us what you come up with.

I would find a machine shop to fab you a piece that is shaped to the top of the blade, and is secured by the thumb-stud.

If you make the wave piece a half inch or more, and get it fit precisely to the curve of the fuller, and make it a VERY tight fit to the blade (width-wise) a single attachment point of the thumb-stud should be sufficient to securely anchor it in place with no movement.

That way, you would have a mod that is completely removable, so you aren't anchored to the wave if you decide that you don't like it.

Edit: and it's possible that doing it like this, where you do not alter the blade in any way, shape, or form, that you might not void the warranty

Wonderful suggestions folks. All very practical refinements of my idea. I appreciate it, and I'll let you know how it goes when I manage to pull it off :)
