Thinking Outloud: How do you foresee the Spyderco Butterfly?

I did a search on the forum and noticed that Sal and Co. are trying to come up with a butterfly desingn. For fun I was thinking how this would be different than MT and BM. I am interested in what you see coming from Spyderco, knowing how inovative they are. Will it have a Spyder hole? Would it need one? What steel and handle material do you want? What would be the main buying point?

Myself, knowing their quality control would be enough for me to buy one. I would like to see the spyer-hole though I can't figure out how functional it would be. It would look cool though. S30V or 440V steel and a nice beefy titanium handle with some indexing (not holes) for twirls and such. Have it come with an IWB kydex sheath with "G" clip for fast drawing.

For blade shape Spyderco should offer a weehawk design and a fully serrated model. Yeah, I want one fully serrated. Now to me, that would scream: SPYDERCO

Titanium for the handles is fine with me. But I would prefer VG-10 for the blade. It seems less fragile than the CPM series of steels, and I think that is important for a knife that might get dropped quite frequently.

The hole would be nice, but I also do not know where to put it. Maybe in the latch?
That way it could facilitate the latch drop opening, but it would make for a huge latch.

I would definitely want the Spyderco spider/bug on the blade area where Benchmade has its butterfly.

I would like to see one possibly with a VG-10 steel blade. Maybe have one version of it with a beefy, CA-legal length blade but almost regular-length handles. The other version, of course, a normal or large-sized one. Spear or drop-point shape. Maybe a pivot that the ELU can adjust him/herself when needed.

I would like to see steel handles with a G10 inlay. A flat-ground utility blade like the Military, VG-10 or BG-42. Reversible batangas/manila latch, tip-up pocket clip.

I'm not much of a Bali guy but I know this much: I definetely won't buy it if it's made in Japan, as it is, i'm struggling with myself over whether or not to buy a Jester and/or an Endura because they are made in Japan :(
More American (or at least Taiwanese) Spydies please!

I'm really intersted in seeing what the brains @ Spyderco come up with for this one. Perhaps the "Spydieholes" in the handles for sheeple-friendly openings. As far as where they're made, as long as the quality is there, they should be OK. Young Cutter, when Spyderco makes knives in Japan, they're made in Seki City, one of the oldest traditional knife/blade centers there is- think of Solingen Germany or Sheffield England- the traditions are quite similar & the products that come out of there are first rate- unlike other "imports".

Rugger,

that's not the problem... I don't like contributing to the Japanese economy, i'm well aware that the quality is there, I care about who's behind it.

I don't know how 'atractive" it would appear ,but perhaps it can incorporate indexed gripping along bottom of handle like on salsa and navigator? Or perhaps elaborate on that concept somehow for improved grip for bali type knife, especially since many balis have only minimal integral guard this would be welcome. It would distinguish it as Spyderco also.

James Y-I live in southern California anf I don't believe butterfly type knife is legal in our state regradless of blade length ,unfortunately:mad:

One good point is there is no blade length limit for folding knife in Ca., at least not statewide although I believe some counties are more restrictive.

Martin

I have been able to dance/manipulate with the prototype spyderfly.
It is a little different than the other balisongs I use and collect.
It's a nice change from the normal / or traditional ones it has a little of this and that blended into to it. The Guy who is doing alot of the desigining (Eric) Got some of is inspriation from the Gunting. Good reason I guess because Bram mentioned to me that he had a lot of inspriation from the balisongs when he was desgining his c68. All in all I dought you will be dissapointed with the outcome.
We did'nt let you down with our first fixed blade did we? :p

I'm thinking wider handle sides with indexing divots. The biggest difference versus other balisongs would probably be in the blade design (Calypso-style flat ground leaf point?). They might also work on some new lock design that would make it Spyderco's own. I dunno how you can improve on the standard lock without sacrificing the inherent speed of the balisong, but if it can be done, I'd like to see it.
