Thinking to get a military...in COMBO edge!

Ok, I know there's a lot of hate for combo edges, but I'm thinking it would be pretty useful for me in the Millie. The knife would see a lot of fish cleaning and utility duty, and the combo still leaves over 2" of plain edge. I don't know...part of me understands the gripe with combo edges, but I think maybe the feeling is more about aesthetics and purist mentality than it is about actual practicality. Anyway, I'm debating it, so your thoughts are welcome.

I have a combo in my car securely clipped driver's side for if there ever were a reason I couldn't get the push button to work the seat belt open.

Its the only one I keep. I see no issues with it butt there is a learning curve to cutting cleanly with it especially when you transition from the clean edge to serrated. I can see it being off putting in everyday use if most of what I were doing was fine cutting. Would almost say you are better off with a small fixed blade and a descaler on the spine of the knife.

Thanks for the tips. Btw, I fish a lot and have proper gear/filet knives/scalers for cleaning...I just use my folders sometimes for fun. Also sometimes I've only got a couple of fish and it's simpler to reach for what's in my pocket than to go up to my house and get out my other gear...that situation happens often actually. I also have the pacific salt in fully serrated edge. I have often thought I would be comfortable using it as an edc if it had a bit more plain edge at the end.

Hehe...sounds like I'm answering my own question here. I guess what it really comes down to is I'm scared to get a combo edge on a $150 knife because...well, I don't really know why?

I think a combo edge in a longer blade is acceptable. I am one that dislikes combo edge, but if enough plain edge is still there, maybe I could warm up to it. I converted my Tenacious CE to a PE.

I think part of the problem is over the last couple of decades we've been inundated with so many cheap junk knives with combo edges that anything with a combo edge starts to look...undesirable. :) I'm trying to let go of that illogical prejudice though, because I think a ce in the military might serve me quite well.

I've said this before, but if the knife is intended to be a collection piece then I want a plane edge.

If the blade is 3.5 inches or larger and is to be a user then I want some serrations.

BTW I just so happen to be carrying my full serrated Endura today.
Spyderco does serrations right.

The CE Milie is an awesome work knife. I carried one for a few years as an industrial electrician and it was the best work knife I've ever had. SE for cutting rope and other nasty things that come up while still having plenty of PE for delicate work like stripping wire. I think the CE Millie is a knife that everyone should have in the stable. It's just a great go anywhere, do anything kind of knife.

I haven't carried the CE Millie in a year or so as I have a different job now. I think I might have to pull the old girl out of the box and put her in the rotation for old times sake.

When I saw you sold the para I figured you would be buying something new and almost suggested the military. I finally took the plunge a month or two ago to check it out and am really enjoying it. Never thought in these years of knife addiction I would go for a folder so large but it is a very cool and versatile blade. I'm not into CE, but am happy with this so far!

I think a CE Military would be great for the things you do- cutting bait, cutting line, rope work, etc. I've always thought the serrations on the CE Mili were especially large and aggressive :D

You know I have another pm2 in 204p right?? I would NEVER sell my only pm2!! I carry it always! But I am just a minimalist and didn't like owning two of he same knife, so I kept the green one. Figured I would much rather own a Millie and a pm2 than two pm2's. I still can't decide on which model. I'm watching the forums too thinking i might score a used one in fancy steel or titanium.

Oh yeah, I saw that upgrade! I have to keep an eye one your threads...all those awesome fish and knives! :D

I think the Military is worth taking for a spin and see what you think.

Going to be an owner of a mille, but mine wont be CE, no way.

I ground the serrations off a manix 2 that was CE, and its turned into a great edc blade. Not so much when it was CE.

So much hate for the poor ce! Hehehe. I'm not immune either. Heck, I KNOW I would find it useful and yet still some purist part of me resists.

The Spyderco Military ComboEdge was one of the first batch of Spydercos I got in Fall of 2005. It has more utility for me in cutting through rougher material. Out of 4" blade with a 3.7" cutting edge you still get 2.45" of straight edge which is a little bit less than the Domino's 2.89".

You've inspired me. Just traded for a benchmade mini presidio combo edge to replace my old buck home depot combo edge cheapie special...let's see how it works out!

Thanks ramzar, great information on the actual cutting edges! So it's 2.45" pe and 1.25" se? That sounds like a perfect mix to me. I think I've about got myself convinced!

Enjoy yours too cchu. Who knows, maybe we'll start a revolution! ;).

I have a combo edge Delca which saw a lot of use when I was a search, rescue and (mostly) storm salvage volunteer with our State Emergency Service. The combination of pe and se was incredibly useful - serrations to cut rope, line and straps, and plain edge for dealing withsmall branches, cutting away at timber and plastic etc. Spyderco does excellent serrations which are designed to maximise cutting efficiency. Let us know what you decide and how it turns out :)

Don't do it! Years down the road when it's your favorite knife you will wish you had gotten a plain edge for the ease of sharpening, aesthetics, and more.

Then he'll turn around, stop moping and buy the PE version! :D
