I have been thinking that I will diversify in my collection in Kukris instead of finishing off the families I have started. I have a 12"AK and a 20" Kobra, and I am thinking about buying either a 20"AK or a 22"GRS. I want something heavy. I have my "man eater" and a "every day" kuks.

What do yall think?

Dave.

The GRS is one of my favourites and heavy enough. I'd consider getting one, the 20" AK will follow anyhow

Yeah, like you said "I want something heavy".
I'm saving for a 22" GRS chiruwa. Hope that
helps...

Bill,
How much would one of those run you? I'd be willing to pay the extra. I have been researching online and I am pretty sure I want a 22" GRS. The chiruwa model sounds as good as it gets.

SamuraiDave, please understand that the
chiruwa style handle is a personal preference
issue. To be fair, the more knowledgable
members of this forum have made valid
arguements both for and against this full
tang style of handle. If you do a search on
the keyword 'chiruwa' you'll no doubt find
these threads. Uncle Bill Martino is the man
to call or E-mail on prices. But I can say
that if you place a special order, be
prepared to wait the 4-6 weeks it takes for
the Kamis to handcraft your Khukuri and
HI to get it to you. Never has it failed to be worth the wait IMHO.

Uncle,
Vince "loves his Durba AK,he will get another Durba, liked my 18"WW2 kami with no name,Vince is hooked! When is the next shipment due? That will mean "MORE" UBDOTD's"
I would say "Just Perfect",but we know how that phrase seems to upset Rus & I would never want to do that!hee!

Jim, like I used to tell the judge, I'm just a poor little social worker and I can't diagnose, but if it looks like a duck, if it waddles like a duck, and it quacks like a duck - ya think maybe we ought to get fish and game in on this?

So you get more viberation from chiruwa style handle? In a knife the size of a 22"GRS would that make much of a difference, being chiruwa or not? I have slept on this one, and think that if you are going to get a chiruwa this would be the knife.

What do yall think?

Dave

I would go with the GRS for extreme chopping performance. For more extreme strength and all round use I would go with the Ang Khola.

Stay with the standard tang!!!!!
I can guarantee you that the standard tang is plenty dayumed strong enough and the standard handle won't bite and pinch like the Chiruwa handle does when the handl slabs
shrink.
What we forget about with the H.I.Khukuri's is that they are all "Full Tang" and the standard working village khukuri in Nepal generally has a partial tang done quick and dirty and they generally hold out for about 5 years.
And I can also guarantee you that the village knife will have done more work in those 5 years than most of ours will do in all our lives.
And if the quick and dirty handle had a pin through the handle and tang it would probably last forever.
Another thing is that the Chiruwa tang, although wider, is also thinner than the standard tang and IMO are more apt to bend under a lot of pressure.
I would say all in all they are about equal in material used.

There is also the idea that if the handle broke on the chiruwa models they would still be useable. It really wouldn't matter if the whole handle broke off of either style.
All anyone would have to do is wrap the end of the blade with a temporary handle. Several wraps of a good duct tape would probably suffice.

Finn's advice on grip should be taken well to heart. It's easier on the wrist and forearm, and it works for more than just a khukuri. I actually started using it for throwing tomahawks, and I get more snap out of the wrist with less muscle fatigue, and the release is just as smooth.
