Wondering what is the thinnest hardened steel you can test on a RC scale hardness tester? Without it breaking cracking...

what’s the thinnest you have tested successfully?

thanks

There are thickness minimums provided in the ASTM specification. These are not necessarily the absolute limit but similar to other ASTM specifications this is to provide guidance as to where results are reliable within some factor of safety. It depends on the measured hardness as higher hardness means the indent is shallower.

Larrin, have you personally done any material at the 62RC .028" thickness?
I will try some soon and report back what I find.

This are blades used in textile industry............... 0.028 or 0.7mm thick and about 60 hrc if I remember well .They are hollow grind from both side and then sharpened from both side like any knife we use .They flex that much that I never considered them to use as knife .But they cut like laser............
I'm curious what you did. Maybe I'll change my mind and put the handle on one :)

I’m asking in regards to testing the core of laminated steel.

would be great for leather work. Leather tools make kitchen knives feel like axes.
