Looking for idea of thin survival kit knives, ones that can be tucked inside even the tightest kit. Under $100.

Have a Gerber LST but the Bahco All Purpose Knife sold in garden stores is slimmer still, anyone put a Bahco to good use?

If all you want is a thin knife, take a look at the Douk Douk. It is a folder, but very very thin. The spring is very strong, so while it isn't a lockblade, it is quite secure. Inexpensive, also. For under $100 you can buy a Douk Douk in all three sizes which are available.

How about A. G. Russel's Woodswalker for about $30. It's a small fixed blade of AUS8. Comes in a nice leather or Kydex sheath.

Here's an idea , if your a do-it-yourselfer and do not mind not having the fancy blades.

I have one of these , the scales are just stamped thin sheet steel , they were pretty marred and had rust spots , so I popped them off revealing a knife just under 1/8 inch thick.
I polished the blade and handle nice and smooth and clean , then blued the entire knife with gun blue. The blade is razor sharp and the tip is thin , actually you can flex the blade like on an Opinel or other thin bladed knife.
There is no blade play at all but this is not a prybar , you are not going to baton your way thru a stand of Fir or combat a legion of infidels but it does fit in very well as a EDC lightwork knife.

Pros
Cost effective and easily replaced
Thin and light and sharp as a razor
Customizable to your desire

Cons
Not a "prybar with an edge"
Nothing stellar , but if it serves your purpose , who cares ? :D

Check the Bark River PSK - seems to fit your designs, and was made to fit in an Otter 2000 box.

If you are looking for a small, tough built, affordable knife you might want to look at the A.G. Russell 2.5" Titanium Lockback or Ultimate Pen knife (1 7/8"). Titanium Handles and VG-10 blade for $25 /$20. I have yet to give in and get one but A.G Russell has a great reputation.

The UPK is a tiny little knife, not as long as your index finger open. The next time I get an order from AG I'm going to try the ti lockback.

If you want a really thin and really small fixed blade check out the Buck Hartsook they can be found at Newgraham Knives.

I would go along with the Buck Hartsook -- a great small knife for a survival kit -- lousy sheath, but great knife

I´m in the same desicion making process. What knife to put in my lil´otterbox. A mini douk douk or a vic alox cadet. Both don´t take up much space. If you want a longer knife I second Esav with the Mercator. Amazing bang for the buck/euro

If a fixed blade, is what you want, look at the EK knives. Just a blade with paracord wrapped around the handle. All I have saw are double edged, like a dagger, but single edged ones might have been made. Was a well made milspec weapon.

Thanks for all the ideas, taking off the scales of a knife is something I hadn't thought of.

I liked the Bahco knife because it looked like a solid handle and the blade was wide and had good belly. The problem was that the way it is packaged is there is only a small circle hole to show the edge and the rest of the package covers the blade. When I opened the package the blade was very poorly grind and the point was not there...absolutly no quality control there.

Since I was looking at the Bahco folding knife first I forgot about fixed blade knives like Becker Necker and Ontario RAT-3, both of which I own. Any knife with a full tang and removable handle slabs would be good to think about.

Tin would be good for a survival sheath for a fixed blade if you need a super thin sheath.

I have 6.5" of space as the knives will go in my M-16 ammo case lengthwise outside the metal tin. May look into Mora blades as well with the idea of making a handle in the field.

This thread has all great ideas for slim survival knives :)

The Becker Necker (BK-11) is pretty thin, kydex sheath included. Get one while you can.

Similar to the Douk-Douk, but with a lock, the Mercator "Cat".

Unnh! Me like Mercator. Mercator heap cheap. Make-um feel inferior. Why you show Mercator, white devil?
