Thinning a BK2

Has anyone here ever considered having their 2 thinned? I was thinking a machine shop with a surface grinder should be able to take 1/16" from each side. The grinder is liquid cooled so the temper should be fine. I love the shape and size of the 2, but have never needed anything thicker than 1/8". I have ABUSED machetes before and they were less than 1/8". Any info/opinions would be appreciated and if someone has done it...pics would be awesomesauce :) thanks.

It's called a BK-10. MUCH easier and cheaper (in time/consumables) to buy a BK-10 and remove the ramp than to thin a BK-2.

Somebody has thinned one out around here I think it was maethor and there is a picture up in the becker photo thread somewhere...

I'll look for a picture.

Daizee is right tho...or try a BK12

Edit:

Found a picture that maethor posted of his mod:

Agreed on the 10. Another option is to try to find a Camillus version, which was thinner.

And yet, with solid steel under the slightly thicker scales, just as thick in hand. Better the 10 or, if a drop point is more to your liking, a 12; it would still cost less in the time/money equation, IMO.

Another vote for the 10. Was really impressed with it after briefly using it at the last gathering. Much more agile than the 2 and I suspect almost as durable. And I like the 2.

OP, may I ask why something only 1/8" thick? Doesn't seem as if it would be too good at batoning; maybe a different sort of knife altogether would suit your intended use better...

Yup, BK10 is a thinned 2. Better to buy the 10 and keep the 2 the way it was meant to be. THICK and AWESOME!!

Whole reason I got the BK2 was because it was a sharpened prybar.
That being said, every once in a while I think about thinning it.

Maybe instead, you could just FFG or regrind and move the grind lines towards the spine, make the cutting edge a little thinner...Mines got maybe a 3/16 convex and it slices nicely... 'course, it's also a Camillus, so it's a tad thinner to start with.

Granite, there are a few reasons...
-I just like an 1/8" blade, I haven't found anything that thickness cant handle. If I need to pry, Ill make or bring a prying tool.
-I like the shape of the 2 (giant tactical Kephart) more than the 10 with it's swedged point and thumb ramp.
-I love modifying and changing my knives :) (the curiosity of being able to do it)

I also wanted to have my TOPS tracker thinned, I think it would work much better in 1/8", and Ive already ground the blade and handle into a more user friendly shape, but it's still too thick. And I know this is sacrilege here, but I'd love to see a thinned 9 as well...I think it would make a super machete.

Well a thin 9 would be easy. Just get ya a decent machete with a wide blade and cut out the 9's profile. It probably would be a handy dandy blade.

^it's not that I'm not pleased, I believe everything can be improved to suit individual tastes, I think polishing a blade that gets used heavily is a waste of time, but plenty of people love 'em, so who am I to stand in their way? And I really enjoy personalizing things...most items are built to suit a vast majority of people, but everyone is different, so those items tend to be imperfect in some way. I have found very few things (knives, cars, motorcycles, computers etc) that don't need to be modified in some way from the factory...even most of the customs I have could stand some personal refining. And the 2 in your sig has the finish stripped, so even you wanted to personalize your knife Td :)

Ever since I got into Mora knives I've really come to like thin blades. If there was a becker like the OP described, I'd snatch it up. Would like to see a thinner tweener too.

buy a 10 and thin that. Half the job already done.
Seriously, flat-grinding hardened steel? Might as well order a custom the way you want. Why wreck factory blades when you can have exactly what you want?

FWIW, I agree that 1/8" is a LOT of knife. Just pick the blade width and grind height to get the geometry you want.
