Thinning Epoxy

I'm trying to find out what the best solution is for thinning Epox. I've done a few Japanese style wrapped handles that I Epoxy coat to seal them due to their primary kitchen use. At present, I tend to lose some of the details when the Epoxy goes on due to the thickness. It tends to coat rather than penetrate. What can I use to thin it out? Will Denatured Alcohol work or should I go with simple paint thinner? Any other suggestions are welcomed.

Here's an example of it turning out too thick and taking on a shine instead of penetrating.
Thanks for any suggestions,

Bob Brownell makes some epoxy thinner for his Acura Glass. It works well with his epoxy, I have no idea how it would work with other epoxies. I would make it a point to use thinner specially developed for the epoxy you use, this just may avoid problems later on.

10-4 on what Peter said. I have used clear epoxy and added Testor's model paint to color it, that will also thin it out.

Thank you all for the great info. I'll post some pics of my latest kitchen blade soon. I'm on the 220 stage of the hand rub so it will be a few days still.

I use lacquer thinner at times on epoxies on fishing rods I build, as it's a little less volatile than acetone.
You can also get better penetration into the cloth wrap by careful use of a heat gun. It will help to get the trapped air out of the fibers. Just don't over do it and burn the epoxy...

I've seen two part epoxy paints. I've never seen it in a clear but it wouldn't surprize if it is made. The last time I bought epoxy I ask them about thining and they said they wouldn't reccomend it.
