Hi folks! Today I decided to test out my new Zwilling Kramer 5,000 grit whetstone (this is basically a Shapton glasstone in 5,000 grit) on my honwarikome higo no kami in aogami steel, to polish the bevels. Unsurprisingly, as this piece is hand forged, low spots revealed themselves shortly after I began. I noticed at this time that the Shapton 5,000 was removing a fair bit of steel & not glazing up like my Naniwa 5,000 Superstone does, so this gave me a silly idea:
thin the blade road with the Shapton instead of a lower grit stone! This worked beautifully (although the Shapton does not bring out the kasumi finish that an aoto would). 20 minutes of sharpening later and I have a totally even blade road FORMED FROM A POLISHING STONE. Anyone else have a similar experience? I suspect that high grit Chosera would perform similarly.
