One of the greatest things about this time of year as an adult, for me anyway, is getting together with family and just enjoying some quality time together.

This year it just happened that not everyone would be around on Christmas day to do the traditional family diner, etc. So we made alternate plans, basically postpone the large family deal until Saturday, but I had nothing much going on so made plans to spend the day with my parents. After some back and forth it was decided that we would head into NYC for an early show, and I would then cook diner at the old house. After repeatedly being asked "what are you making" I finally went to the store on 12/22 to see what looked good I cam up with a menu:

King Crab legs and Fresh Gulf Shrimp Cocktail for an appetizer
Seared sea scallops with salt and pepper for a second course
Filet Minion with a black pepper crust, fingerling potatoes with black truffles and rosemary, and baby Brussels Sprouts as a main course

The big night comes, and I am at my folks place, without any of my usual kitchen cutlery. Everything they have is well, boring, and mostly dull. Then in the back of my mind I seem to recall a BK7 I bought while still living with them that I hadn't seen in years, hmm I wonder if I could find that knife. A few minutes of searching, and finally in the garage I find my prize. As it turns out the BK7 was more or less where I had left it after beating on some 2x4s before I moved out, so into the kitchen it went. Was it still sharp after all these years? Yes, I am in luck!

Splitting crab shells? No problem!
Cleaning raw shell on shrimp? Kind of awkward, but mission accomplished!
Slicing potatoes and brussels sprouts? Just fine.

Did I get some strange looks? Not at all, hmm maybe that is more of a comment on me than the knife?? Or maybe it was that time I carved the Thanksgiving turkey with a SERE 2000 folder at the grandparents?

Anyway long story short, I got reunited with an absolutely great blade, and had a great time using it to cook for my amazing parents. Hope everyone else had as great a time as I did.

No pics?! 😱 sounds like you guys ate well. Glad you found your 7. Hope you took it with you.

Downside? No pics, was having too much fun.

Upside? Great meal, great day with the folks, and yes I did take the 7 with me so reunited.

Congrats on the great meal and the 7! I don't use my 7 as mush as my 16 or my 9 but it's good to know that it can handle KP duty when necessary.

Grats on finding your knife!

If you think the 7 is fun in the kitchen, you need to get yourself a 15 and a 5

Great story; I understand about no pics - you get into the cooking groove and the last thing you think about is a camera. What I can't understand is how on earth you could have left a BK7 at your folks and forgotten it! Luckily Beckers cannot have their feelings hurt, otherwise I doubt you could have coaxed such a delicious sounding meal out of it ;). Glad you are reunited, tho.
