One thing that has interested me about survival and being prepared for unexpected and potentially dangerous situations, since I started getting interested in this stuff a year or so ago, is how practical some people's planning really is.
So, just for fun I'd like some responses to this situation:
My premise is this: Survial situations frequently come at unexpected times and in unexpected ways. Sure if I know I'm going to be flying in a small private plane over a wilderness area or backpacking I may have a decent kit with me but what about a sudden unexpected situation so:
If you were snatched up right at this moment and thrown into a survival situation...what would you actually have, from an equipment standpoint, to work with? Just to be fair I'll let you grab something that you aren't actually wearing on your person so long as its within one step and arms reach of where you are right now.
Here's my answer:
My EDC consists of a Luminox Watch, Leatherman Wave, L. Sebenza, a small wallet with a magnetic money clip, and a Victorinox SwissCard in the wallet.
If I make my grab for something then I can get my canvas school bag in which there are a few additional items: Mini-MagLight, Victorinox Mountaineer SAK, Sharpening stone, a very small first-aid kit (really just for fairly minor cuts--band-aids, some cut cream, and a couple of packs of Tylenol.) Tool adaptor for my Wave, small screwdriver, earplugs, sunglasses with a retention strap, a couple of small notebooks and my leather day planner, there happens to be a decent compass in there too but honestly thats mostly because I've been doing some reading on Orienteering and have been using it with my book, probably not a bad idea to keep it where it is though.
While it could be a lot worse, it is making me realize that I really do need to get on the stick and assemble a better, compact, more formal Survival Kit to carry.
I'll look forward to seeing what some more experienced folks carry...
