In the move with Gary Cooper he used a luger to help clean up the german position. I've heard it is because the design of the 1911 didn't permit the use of blanks. Anybody able to verify this?

I guess that's true... who knows what Hollywood did to the real story, but certainly he was depicted as a fellow who had been taught to turn the other cheek.

I saw the movie, but cannot remember whether Luger or 1911.
