Just a simple utility knife that I made for a friend. Sure, there are numerous design elements here that borrow heavily from traditional Japanese utility knives as well as some of their modern Western interpretations, but this is NOT a kiridashi. No. I wouldn’t think of calling it something I can’t pronounce properly. Instead, I’ll call it “schnurd.” :)

Schnurd is forged from 1084 carbon steel and measures just a hair over 6 inches from tip to ass. It has a pretty steep chisel grind with a cutting edge not even two inches long. The primary bevel is ground down to 800-grit while the remaining surface area remains forge-fresh and unfinished. The thong hole is lined with brass tubing, peened over a chamfered edge.

I rather like this little schnurd. Might make a few more.... What do you guys think? Like it? Hate it? Comments, critiques, and suggestions welcomed....

Love the Schnurd Wulf it looks really comfortable for repeat use. I have a couple of chisel grind Kiridashi in my shop made from old files for leather working and what not but don't have a Schnurd.
I think I need one though...and I'm not sure why but I like saying Schnurd, and suddely seem to dislike saying Kiridashi.

That's cool looking little cutter Derrick - simple, functional, attractive - what's not to like?

Looks like you forgot to grind the other side, ya bastid! :D

Is he capable?

Nice schnurd, glad you didn't call it a kiridashi, because that would have been a terrible kiridashi, but it IS a REALLY nice schnurd

Good luck forward going with schnurd making, you are onto something here....may others follow your lead.

Thanks guys. STeven, thank you also for that informative post the other day. Sadly, the only entry for Kiridashi on wikipedia is about a horse. From Canada. And can you believe it they don't even have a page for Schnurds!

Lorien I was actually thinkin about you today - the friend that I made this for is an avid mountain biker and he took me out on some awesome woods trails this morning. Came back bloody and muddy and with a HUGE grin on my face. Good times....

eeeeexcelllllent:D:thumbup:

Ah, Vermont. My dad and his wife lived in that lovely state for many years and I sampled some fine riding while visiting them.

Let me know if you need any bike parts;):D

Schnurd Schmerd, whatever you call it Derrick, it is a cool little knife. Very nice schnurd.

I like your Schnurd. Haha. Here's some pics of an "Anti-Schnurd" that I got from a vietnam veteran. He said a blacksmith gave it to him when he was stationed in Okinawa, and that it had been in the family for generations. He said that the man who forged this kiridashi also forged real katanas. It is made out of two layers of steel, blue for edge retention and sharpness, and white for toughness and flexabilty. It has three japanese letters on the back and one of which means, "from" or "house of". It has a few diferent meanings.
