So recently, my grandfather gave me his Kentucky Long Rifle, along with a bag that had all of the accessories he had. Which included a knife, this knife :

Now odviously the handle is made out of a deer antler. It curves like this :

Now what I would really like to do is make this my hunting knife. I need a sheath though, and I would like to try to make one. I'v never made a sheath and don't even know where to start... I don't know where to get leather..So I was hoping you guys could give me some ideas of how to do this and if possible where to get the items I'd need. I was thinking of having a snap go around the handle but it could be used with a string of rawhide. I'm really not looking for anything fancy, just somthing to hold it so I can carry it while hunting :) Thanks alot in advance, hopefully you guys can help me out.

What you have there is a patch knife. A nice little one at that for shooting.

Problem with using a knife like that as a hunting knife is that there is no guard to keep your hand from slipping right down and getting into the blade. And antler, when bloody, is slick as snot (as are most other materials). I don't think I would chance getting hurt using it.

It's a nice sentiment, to make it your hunting knife, but it was a knife that wasn't designed for that. It was designed to make a quick cut from the patch material and go back into the shooting bag.

Zach, just so you'll know someone noticed you, but I'm going to have to think about this a while. My first thought was a rawhide pouch sheath, but that curved handle and relatively short blade present some design concerns, if not problems. In the meantime maybe some of our other buddies will jump in here with the answer.

Edited to add: Griz was posting while I was typing. I have to say I agree with him completely. Keep it as a family heirloom and use a knife made for hunting.

Thanks you guys ^_^ I'll put it up on my bookshelf along with everything else my grandfather has given me over the years :p I'll stick with my buck 110 :)

Annnnd offtopic, since this thread mentions hunting I got my first buck today ^_^ got a small spike that I thought was a doe when I shot it :p

Been there done that my friend, happend 2 times last year within 30 mins of each other. Nailed 2 buttons that looked like does through my scope. They ate good though, sucks they didn't get to grow up into trophies.

Congrats on the deer!

Thanks :) today was crazy with deer, somthing spooked a doe and a buck and they took off running towards us, and a buck that had only one side of his antlers ran and slid between 2 feet of our treestand. I couldn't get the gun up on time though.
