This is really, really strange...

I am not trolling, and am dead serious (dead tired too). The fine side of my Norton india seems to work pretty well to reprofile my Spyderco Military in S30V. Military came off of our exchange. And my Buck Vantage in S30V (Bos heat treat) that I got straight from our fine dealer in LA, Knifeworks. I thought S30V would be harder to sharpen than this??? I have a Cold Steel in AUS-8A that is giving me more trouble and I am using an SiC stone for it. I very seriously doubt the Millie is fake and I have no doubt that Knifeworks sold me a real deal Buck. Did I miss a memo somewhere? Or is this like D2, more hype about how hard it is to sharpen Vs reality of not that bad?

My s30v millie is easy to sharpen to ridiculous levels. Elmax isn't bad either. The only steels that I've had a hard time with have been thickly ground s110v and 1095. After that it becomes an issue with the blade grind. Tantos and recurves are harder to get just right vs straight or slightly curved blades with different steels. I don't get the problem people have with s30v either.

I guess I should add that the thick s110v pushed the limits of my patience due to it's wear resistance and the 1095 pushed the limits of my patience due to its lack of the same.

I have sharpened my Benchmade and Spyderco knives with S30V blades on my Norton stone without a problem. Not so strange.

Never had a problem getting S30v sharp. Keeping it sharp is another matter.

It took me over 5 hours of straight sharpening on my Lansky to re-profile a Spyderco in S30V, don't know what you guys are talking about

It took me 30 seconds on my paper wheels to reprofile a manix to 30 DI.

S30V isn't bad if the grind is in your favor; I believe that goes for any steel.

What do you mean if the grind is in your favor? Is that thickness behind the edge? If so, then it a lot easier to sharpen a thinly ground knife.

I guess it is a testament to modern benchstones that the grind is more important than the steel type.

Touching up my one S30V blade on the SharpMaker is quick-ish. Takes about twice as long as a more simple steel like 8Cr13Mov. So still fast. The same blade on DMT plates is very fast, just like almost anything else. It was also short work on the WorkSharp KO which mostly uses AlO2 abrasives.

As Sadden said above though, S30V's ability to hold an edge through everyday use is much less "super" than I had expected.

Brian.
